answer is no to either question, then itâs not important.â
âIs he always this hard to wake up?â T.J. asked.
Dunc nodded. âSometimes worse. Iâve had to learn to be creative. Watch this.â
Dunc dropped down by Amosâs ear. âItâs about Melissa.â
Amos sat straight up. âWhat?â
Dunc grinned at T.J. âWorks every time. Now we just go downstairs and wait.â
In a few minutes Amos came down the stairs. A sheet that was caught in the back of his pants was trailing behind him.He passed Mrs. Culpepper on the stairs. Over the years sheâd almost gotten used to Amos staying overnight. She scooped up the sheet. âRough night, Amos?â
Amos nodded.
âDunc and T.J. are eating breakfast, if youâre interested.â
âThanks.â
Amos stumbled into the kitchen and sat down, propping his head up with one hand. âDid someone mention Melissa?â
âGlad you could join us,â Dunc said. âWe were discussing our plan of attack for today.â
âWeâre attacking Melissa?â Amos said, still half asleep.
T.J. laughed. âI didnât know you were this much fun, Amos.â
âHow about some breakfast to help you wake up?â Dunc said.
âWhat is it?â
âOatmeal.â
âYeecchh! That stuff is for horses. Whereâs my â¦?â
Dunc set a box of Fruit Slams in front of him.
âThatâs better. Now, what are we attacking?â
Dunc cleared his throat. âWeâve been talking about how to keep the crooks under surveillance todayââ
âSpeak English,â Amos growled.
ââand we think it would be best to go back undercover.â
Amos shook his head. âMelissa is not going to see my skinny legs in green tights ever again in this lifetime.â
âThatâs the beauty of our planâactually, T.J. thought of it. Melissa will never know itâs you. Guaranteed.â
âGuaranteed?â
Dunc put his hand on his heart. âTrust me.â
âDonât say that. I was about to go for it until you said that.â
T.J. came around the table. âI promise, Amos. She wonât recognize youâthat is, not until after we catch the bad guys. Then youâll probably be a hero. Maybe have to goon TV to tell about it. Talk shows, the news, that kind of stuff.â
Dunc winked at T.J. behind Amosâs back and whispered, âYouâre catching on.â
The boys were in the rest room at the mall. They were helping Amos into his disguise.
âWhat did I do to deserve you guys?â Amos looked at T.J. âItâs bad enough coming from my best friend. But my own cousin?â
âYou were the one that didnât want to be recognized,â T.J. said. âI was only trying to help. We called Wallyâs Custom Costumes, and this was the only thing he had that he could guarantee no one would recognize you in. I thought youâd be happy.â
âIâm supposed to be happy wearing antlers? Iâve gone from Peter Pan to Bullwinkle.â
Dunc spoke up. âWe were lucky to get the costume. It fits in with the season and everything. No one will be suspicious of one of Santaâs reindeer.â
âDonât you think the store will know if they ordered a reindeer or not?â Amos asked.
âThatâs whatâs so great about this plan,â Dunc said. âThe store will think you came with the Santa. And the Santa will think you work for the store. Itâs perfect. Now, get your head on. The storeâs about to open.â
âWait a minuteâwhat are you two going to be doing while Iâm watching the store?â
âWeâll be right there with you, Amos.â Dunc shoved the reindeer head down over Amosâs ears. âOnly not as visible as yesterday. If you see anythingâyell. Weâll be there in a flash. Donât
