special guests, foreign dignitaries, and diplomats attending. Iâm afraid a lot of them will be wearing Revolutionary War costumesâincluding coats just like the Dangerous Double.â
âThen it would be difficult to spot our enemy at the ball,â Ben said.
The president gave him a sad nod.
âSo thatâs the threat: This bad dude wants to kill you and tons of other people at the ball,â I said. âBut heâll be wearing the coat, so heâll be safe. Waitâhe doesnât have the Dangerous Double yet, right?â
âNot as far as we know.â President Griffin sighed. âThe message has me worried that he or she is close. Weâve got to find it first.â
Black passed around a picture. âThis is George Washingtonâs coat, one thatâs on display at the Smithsonian. It was a very dark blue, with cream trim and gold buttons. The double looks just like it.â
President Griffin added, âIâve been told the coat is in good shape, and unless you look close, you wonât spot where the bullets bounced off it.â
âAnd with this coat, the bad guy would get out unharmed,â Ben said. Thanks, I already pointed that out.
But I wasnât going to have him rattle my cage, so I asked, âWhy donât you just cancel the ball?â
âThe perpetrator would simply pick another place and time,â Agent Stark said softly. âIf someone wants to do something, theyâll find a way.â
âCopy that,â Ben added. âWe know when and where the enemy will strike. This is a position of advantage.â
I hate to admit it, but Ben was right: At least now we knew the when and where. We just needed to figure out who was behind it all.
âMy life and my familyâs safety depend on you all.â President Griffin rubbed her hands together. âI need to know who the mole is among my staff. And most important, I need you to find this Dangerous Double. Before my nemesis does.â
Wilson gave us back our phones and whisked President Griffin away right after that conversation. She was already late for some briefingâplaces to go and a country to lead. She followed Wilson into the hall, and there was the metal clank of the door a second later.
Albert Black told us that theyâd leased one of the offices on the fourth floor of the buildingâlike Wilson said, we were underneath the Herbert C. Hoover Building. Itâs about three blocks long, and there are all these government offices inside the place. Thereâs also the National Aquarium in the basement and the White House visitor center on the north end.
âLetâs go upstairs, and then weâll hash out a plan,â Black said. He had a key to access the elevator. We got off on the fourth floor and went down a hall to gather in a cramped conference room.
I was beginning to feel a little nervous. These Pandora missions were dangerousâand this time the president and her familyâs lives were at stake. That history test wasnât looking like such a big deal anymore.
Albert Black clapped. âOkay, everyone. Have a seat. Time to get to work.â
âYessir.â Ben almost jumped to attention.
âYou can drop the whole soldier-ready-for-duty act now,â I said as we all sat around the table. âThe president is gone. And I wish you were, too.â
Ben gave me an irritated glare.
âKids, kids ,â Albert Black said with his rumbling voice. âSave the fighting for after weâre done with this mission. In case you havenât noticed, we donât have much time here.â Black looked to Agent Stark. âWhatâs your take?â
âWell, first off, I wish youâd told me from the beginning what this was about.â Stark looked angry and a little hurt. âWhere are you even stayingâI thought we agreed on the Thrifty Suites?â
âWeâre at the Bergdorf Hotel,â
