each other this way.
âI missed you so much, mi esposa . Tú eres mi vida. â
âAnd I missed you holding me. I love your arms around me. I feel so safe and loved when youâre here.â
He kissed her several times overâher mouth, her neck, her breasts, her belly, the hairs between her legs, back up to her lipsâand soon he was ready for her again, pushing deep inside her with an aching need to be sure heâd pleased her after over three weeks apart. They groaned together with their climax, then Jake wilted beside her. They took a moment just to enjoy the quiet, the feel of naked body against naked body, to listen to each otherâs soft breathing, to stroke each other lovingly. Finally Jake rolled away from her with a deep sigh. âGod, I hate this job. I hate not being here to watch out for you every single day.â
âEvie and I get along fine when youâre gone.â
âBut youâre Jake Harknerâs wife and sheâs Jake Harknerâs daughter, which means youâre always in danger, and so are the grandkidsâall because of me.â
âJake, stop it.â Randy put an arm across his chest and nestled into his shoulder. âYou were in prison for four years, and we were just fine.â
âYou had Jess York to watch out for you. And it was different with me locked up. Most thought Iâd stay in prison the rest of my life, but Iâm out now, and a target for those who want to lay a claim to fame through me.â
She kissed his neck. âYouâve just been through a lot and itâs got you on edge, thatâs all. Weâre safe here in town, and Evie has Brian.â
He rubbed his eyes. âI suppose. Damn, Iâm suddenly really tired, Randy,â he told her, the weight of the last three rugged weeks and the pain of Brad Buckleyâs remark clearly taking their toll. âIâm sorry, but I need to sleep. I canât even get up to eat any of that stew you made.â
Randy pulled the covers over them and snuggled against him. âFor heavenâs sake, Jake. Do you think I wouldnât understand how tired you are? Itâs all right.â She kissed his chest. âI love you. Thank God youâre home safe and sound and Lloyd is all right.â
He closed his eyes. âHeâs fine.â His words came in a lazy mutter. âI love you.â
Randy settled against his shoulder, and in moments he was breathing deeply in an exhausted sleep. She lay still, enjoying the feel of his warmth in her bed again. The sun wasnât even completely set yet, but it didnât matter. She knew Evie would make sure no one bothered them. The stew would simmer on the cookstove for several hours. There was no need to do anything with it right now. It was enough to just lie here with her husband beside her.
Remarks like Brad Buckleyâs earlier today brought forth pieces from Jakeâs past that he might never be able to put behind him, memories that evoked pain and rage. And because she didnât want to worry him, she kept silent about the pain in her belly. It was nothing. It would go away. The Jake Harkner who lay beside her now was a far cry from the man he became when he put on guns and badge and walked out the door. He needed this peace. He didnât need something new to worry about.

Lloyd trotted his horse closer to the Donavansâ cabin, hoping Katie was home. Heâd always liked her, and the part of him that wanted more kept arguing with the deeper part of him that missed Beth so much that heâd almost lost his mind when she died losing their baby eighteen months ago. The only thing that kept him from returning to a life of drinking and despair after her death had been his father, whoâd literally slugged him and hog-tied him one night. Jake and Sheriff Sparks had dragged him into a jail cell and left him there until he sobered up.
A lot of long talks with both his
