landing stopped their conversation as I walked in their direction. I must have looked like a high-class escort. They smiled and nodded their heads. One of them beckoned for me to come over. “Where you going so fast?” he said, and the others laughed. Bruises dotted his arms. Maybe they were users. I didn’t want to be anywhere near them.
I clutched my purse in front of my chest and stared down at the ground as I quickened my pace to get to Brandon’s room. Standing in front of it, I took a deep breath and knocked.
As I waited, I could feel the men in the landing staring holes into my clothes. “Come on, asshole,” I thought to myself. “Open up.” Moments later, Brandon opened the door and as much as I didn’t want to be here, I was happy to see him because at least it meant I was out of sight of those other guys.
Brandon stepped outside and looked up and down the walkway as I pushed passed him. Although I was relieved to be out of the other men’s sight, now I was more anxious than ever.

Chase
“Yeah, thanks Hank. I know…it’s been a long day.” I switched my phone to my other ear and leaned back in my chair, staring at the sky. “Brown hair, six foot, slight build, that’s what he looks like? How long has she been there? Okay, keep an eye on her, don’t intervene unless you need to.”
I tapped the button and tossed my phone on the table in disgust. I was in shock as I listened to Hank, the head of my security team, provide the details of his day following Summer. I didn’t want to be suspicious, but I had leaned my lesson before. Now, it had been confirmed, twice.
“You’re right, she’s with him.” I stared across the patio table at Alyssa. “You were right to come to me. I know it’s not easy breaking your best friend’s trust like that.”
Alyssa bit her lip as she fidgeted in her seat. She was in yoga pants and a loose t-shirt, much less formal than I saw her at the office, but she’d come over in a rush. I was surprise she had called and asked to speak with me at home and not let Summer know. “Please, don’t tell her I said anything to you. She’d kill me.”
“Never. I’ll keep this between us. I had my suspicions and Hank confirmed it.” I took a sip from my glass of wine. “She’s in trouble and if you waited, it could have gotten worse.”
I exhaled as I imagined what Summer might be doing at this very moment. A sick feeling filled my stomach as thoughts raced through my head. How involved was she with this guy? All I knew was what Alyssa had told me and what I had sickly imagined. Her ex-boyfriend showed up from out of the blue and Summer has been acting strangely ever since. It wasn’t much to go on, but something didn’t feel right.
“Chase, we found three more, the office, bedroom and living room. That’s ten total.” Jake walked on to the patio from the main living room, a small nerdy looking kid behind him.
    “And they’re still on?”
“Yes. Gabe, the IT guy, checked the network and said they’re still attached and sending data.” Jake smiled at Alyssa and then quickly turned his attention back to me.
I nodded at the kid as he stood nervously behind Jake. I took a long swig from my glass. “Good. Just leave them there.”
