Iâm going to be first lady, itâll be my duty to talk to the women of the church when issues arise.â
âSheâs right,â Kelly said. âShe might as well start now.â
Samson had to think quickly. He didnât want Julia anywhere near Delilah. âYouâre busy with last-minute wedding details. Iâm not trying to put more responsibilities on you.â
Julia walked up to Samson and gave him a tight hug. âDear, Iâll take on this responsibility with great pleasure.â
Before Samson could protest, Julia was out the door. The satisfied look on the faces of his mom and Dorothy made him wonder if he was worrying for nothing. He prayed Delilah wouldnât tell Julia about their indiscretions.
Chapter 7
Delilahâs house was located in the Eden Garden neighborhood, not too far from the church. Delilah hadnât been home long enough to change clothes when her doorbell rang. She looked out the peephole and chuckled. Delilah opened the door. âWell hello there,â she said.
âNo need for pleasantries,â Julia responded.
Delilah started to say, âIn that case, we can hold this conversation on the porch,â but instead she said, âCome in and have a seat.â
She wanted Julia to see that she too was living large. No, she didnât have the big house, but her home was filled with nice furniture, and Black art covered the walls. Each room was color coordinated to fit a certain theme. âWould you like something to drink?â she asked as she took a seat across from Julia.
âNo. I doubt if Iâll be here that long.â
âWhatever.â Delilah turned and looked Julia directly in the eyes. âSo why are you here?â Delilah watched Julia squirm in her seat. Not too cocky now are you?
âMs. Dorothy told Pastor Judges about your altercation.â
âFirst of all, if youâre going to come to me with some mess, get your story straight.â
âAll I know is what she told Pastor Judges.â
âDid Samson send you over here?â
âAs the future first lady, it will be my job to diffuse situations like this, so I wanted to squash this before it got out of hand.â
âThereâs nothing to squash. We had a meeting. She said a few things I didnât like, and I said a few things she didnât like. End of story.â
âWell, Ms. Dorothy said you attacked her.â
Delilah didnât allow Julia to finish. âMs. Dorothy is a bitter old woman who yâall let get away with talking to folks crazy. I respect my elders, but when she questioned how I dressed, that was it for me.â
Julia cleared her throat after looking Delilah up and down. âYou have to admit, you do dress provocatively.â
Delilah stood up. She pressed her hands down on her knee-length skirt. âAm I to be ashamed of the body that God blessed me with? Unlike you, I donât have a problem flaunting my body.â
âYou can choose to wear something else.â
Delilah laughed. âJulia, if I wore a sack, your man, the good reverend, would still notice the body hidden underneath it, so stop hating.â
Julia turned beet red. âYou have no shame do you?â
âI havenât done anything.â
âGod is not the author of confusion.â
Delilah placed her hand on her hip. âAre you calling me a devil?â
âIâm just saying you could have handled that situation with Ms. Dorothy better.â
âMaybe so, but I didnât grow up at Peaceful Rest and will not let her or you disrespect me.â
Julia stood up. âI should have known coming over here wouldnât do any good.â
âThen why did you come?â Delilah asked.
âLetâs drop it. Itâs probably best that you resign from the Pastorâs Aide committee,â Julia said before walking toward the door.
âOhhh. Now I see what this is about. You donât
