Paula completely naked except for a sparkling G-string.
Maggie was still recovering from the act when the manager approached and threw Natâs card down on the table. âWhat dâya want?â
âYou know her?â Nat asked, showing the man Johannaâs photo.
The man picked it up. âMaybe. Whoâs asking?â
âSheâs missing,â Nat answered.
âYou the cops?â
âNo. Weâve been hired to find her.â
âThat little bitch has caused me a lot of trouble. Iâve got her billed as part of my International Revue âHeidi from Holland.â
He sighed. âThe clients loved her, with those long blonde braids and that innocent schoolgirl look . . . went over great with them.â
âAnd she stripped?â Maggie asked, awed.
âWhy not?â
âWhen did you see her last?â Nat asked.
âCouple of weeks ago. Mustâve been around the second of September.â
âDidnât you wonder where sheâd gone?â Nat asked.
âSure. I was steamed, but I figure sheâd gone off to strut her stuff someplace else!â
âCan we speak to some of the girls backstage?â
âI dunno âbout that.â But another folded bill changed hands, and the manager tilted his head for them to follow him backstage. Banging on the door of a dressing room, he flung it open to reveal several girls sitting in front of makeup mirrors. âThis gent wants to talk to you about Heidi.â He turned to Nat. âMake it snappy. Theyâre due back on the stage in ten minutes.â
âSheâs gone for good, eh?â Gretel asked. âCanât say I blame her. Heâs a pig to work for.â
âShe didnât say anything to you about leaving?â Maggie asked.
âHeidi was very quiet.â Maggie turned to the speaker, a dark-haired girl dressed in a multicoloured Mexican skirtâand little else. âBut she had a boyfriend,â she continued. âHe usually picked her up as soon as the show was over.â She bent to stroke the chihuahua that sat shivering on a velvet cushion at her feet.
âWhat a cute little dog,â Maggie exclaimed.
âChi-Chi. Heâs part of my act,â the girl explained. Maggie couldnât even imagine what part the poor little thing played.
âDid any of you get to know her well?â Nat asked.
âNot really,â the girl billed as Gretel answered. âShe always acted like we wasnât good enough for her.â Maggie noted that all the girls had Canadian accents. So much for international flavour.
Just as they were about to leave the dressing room, Maggie asked, âWhat did the man who picked Johanna up look like?â
âNever really got to see him, did we, Conchita?â
âNo. Always waited in his car out back.â
âDo you think he could have been blond?â
âNaw,â Gretel said. âHe looked dark-haired to me.â
After thanking the girls and leaving one of their cards, Maggie and Nat left the club and headed back to Kitsilano. âWell!â Nat remarked as he pulled up in front of Maggieâs house. âAnd to think her parents had no idea.â
CHAPTER THREE
âS o,â Nat asked the following morning, âdid you sleep well after your night on the town?â
âIâll never be able to look another dove in the face,â Maggie answered, laughing. âBut that nightclub sure puts another face on Johanna Evansâ disappearance.â She paused as she looked down at the list in front of her. âIâve been looking over the names that Marie left for us. I think the vet, Dr. Carl Williams, would be the one to start with. Then thereâs a girlfriend, Sandra Owens, and a boyfriend, Hans Van Dyke.â
âGive the vet a call,â Nat said, âand make an appointment for one of us to go around there.â
Maggie nodded and reached for the
