months too.”
“Yes. Just pack what you want. We’ll send a truck for the rest. There’s plenty of room.” At least he hoped so. Skylar came out of the house then, and he told her the plan. “We can’t let them stay here. He’ll come back over and over. I’d like to take them to the compound, please? If not, then…then I’ll have to move in with them until I know that they’ll be safe.”
“Your mom is packing her things now to come with us. You should as well. I’d like a word with Davis for a moment. Then he’ll come and help you.” Remy came out of the house too, and Vicki stood up as Skylar continued. “He won’t be long.”
As soon as she went in the house, Remy leaned against the wall and smiled as he spoke. “She’s a faerie. And not just any kind of faerie, but a life one. Not entirely sure what that is yet, but her mom will talk to you later. She’s been afraid that someone would find out, and now that we’re here…for some reason she trusts us.”
Davis wondered if there was more. Then something occurred to him. “She doesn’t know. She thinks she’s human, and no one ever told her differently.”
“Her mom said she was afraid if her brother or father had found out, he might have…he would have hurt her.” Davis stood up when Remy continued, nodding to the man lying on the deck. “He knows now. That’s why he came here today. He has it in his head that he’s going to take her and use her somehow.”
Nodding, Davis went into the house. A faerie. He didn’t even have a clue what that might mean for the two of them. Going into her room, he was humbled at how sparse it was. In fact, the entire house looked like it had the barest of necessities and nothing more. Not even a television graced the living room. And the lamp, a lone one, sat on the floor rather than on an end table. He asked her what was going and was told that only the shirts on their backs belonged to them, along with a few personal things. Davis was going to have a lot of explaining to do when they got back to the compound, and a great deal of it was going to piss her off, he just knew it. And for some reason, he was actually looking forward to her temper again.

Chapter 3

Master limped around the cave. He wasn’t happy with his current living quarters, but he knew that he was safest here. Who would have thought that something so mundane would hurt him so badly? The gun, it turned out, was his own worst enemy.
That bitch. She’d done this to him. He was going to kill them all but make her suffer the most. His plan was now on hold; his people, his monsters were awaiting a leader. And he was hiding in a hole so that he could mend himself. Things could not have been any worse, he thought.
Looking down at his belly, he wondered if he should chance another shift. The last time had nearly put him out for a week, but he’d been healed…some, anyway. But he had things to do. Master had to get things rolling again before someone else was given his domain. And he had no doubt that they would if he didn’t show up soon.
“There you are.” He turned to look at the man. Master hadn’t talked to him a lot over the past few weeks since he’d been hiding out, but when he did, it was never face to face but like now, with he and Master in different locations and using a hologram kind of system. “I’ve been searching for you. When do you think you’ll be able to get back to work? The soldiers are at a loss without guidance. While we have a great many of the soldiers now, they are fumbling around and not doing a good job.”
“I’m nearly back to my old self. Just this morning I was able to fly to the compound and back to see what was progressing.” Lies, all of it. But the stupid man didn’t seem to know it. As he bopped his head up and down, Master wanted to rip it from his body. “Have you been able to get me more stones? They’re taking them now and not returning them to me. I cannot believe the nerve of
