my house. Please. I don’t know what’s going on, but I have to go. Can you just bring a car around so that we can go? This is…this is just too much.”
“I’m sorry, Vicki, but this is a much faster way than a car.” Skylar pulled Vicki to her and took to the sky. Both he and Remy stood there watching them until they were out of sight. Davis looked at Remy.
“I’m going to be so fucked up when we get back, aren’t I?” He looked at Remy, who spread his wings and put out his hand. The smile on his face made Davis want to hit him. “You’re enjoying this a little too much I think.”
“Nope. Enjoying this more than you think. She’s a hellion, and I’m going to love watching her tame you.” He asked him why him. “Because, my dear fellow, she is not going to be tamed, ever. And you know what? I hope you never try.”
He was suddenly airborne. The flight this time seemed more urgent than the last time he’d flown with him. And Davis could see that the malefactors had gotten larger; their groups seemed to be less organized, however. He said as much to Remy.
“I think the more they make, the stupider they get. Like inbreeding. I’m not sure that would be the case here, but Weston and I have been talking about it.” He pointed at a house surrounded by them. There was a lone police car there as well, but the cop didn’t appear to be doing much to take away the man screaming at the house. “Skylar and Vicki are inside. They are having a difficult time talking her mother into leaving with them. I would say that the wings have frightened her.”
“Shit.” As they landed on the back deck, the man came around the house. As soon as he came up to them, his gun coming up to his shoulder, Davis hit him in the face with his fist. He probably should have checked his power just a little more, but the man had interrupted his getting to know Vicki. Remy was laughing when the back door opened. He shut up when Vicki glared at him.
“He’s hurt her.” Davis started to move by her and into the house. “He hurt her again, I should say. I can’t get her to not let him in the house. This loyalty thing is going to get us killed one of these days, but she…. At least this time she locked him out when he went out to the car to get a gun. She said he was going to kill her.”
“She’s going to come with us.” Vicki looked at Remy, then at Davis. The fear on her face was enough to make him want to pick up the man and hit him again. “Do you have a car? We can drive you both to the compound.”
Her look of relief was profound. Instead of going into the house with her, as he should have he supposed, he pulled her out onto the deck and held her. She clung to him as she cried. When he saw Remy enter the house, Davis picked her up in his arms and sat on the chair, the only one on the deck.
“I can’t stand him.” Davis didn’t much care for the bastard either, and he’d not even met him yet. He looked over at the piece of shit still lying on the deck, out cold. “He wanted her to give him my pay check. I have it put into her account because we both live here, and she pays all the bills with it. We’re so far behind in everything because of him. And he just doesn’t care. What I should say is that he doesn’t care what happens to us, so long as he has what he wants.”
“I’m sorry. So very sorry.” She looked up at him, and Davis knew for as long as he lived—and according to Hector, that was going to be pretty much forever—he’d never forget the moment he fell in love with her.
“Can we stay at your house? Just until…for a little while. I won’t be a problem, and my mom is a nurse too. I…I lost my job apparently, because I was a no-call/no-show for four days. But we’re going to lose everything anyway. Randall taking my paycheck wouldn’t have made that much of a difference in the long scheme of things. We were set to be tossed out of here soon anyway, and the heat has been off for a couple
