thought. Angry because I broke my promise and told her about the laboratory.
âI followed Tobias when he wasnât paying attention,â Honoria said. âYou mustnât blame him, Justin. It wasnât his fault.â
âThatâs not trueââ Tobias began.
Justin laughed. âBut of course I wonât blame Tobias,â he said. âHow can I blame him for wanting to be with you? If you were my fiancée, I wouldnât let you out of my sight, Honoria.â
Justin took a step closer to her. Tobias clenched his hands into two tight fists.
Heâs always flirting with her, he thought. Always trying to take her away from me.
Honoria took a quick step back. Tobias breathed a sigh of relief.
She doesnât even want to be near him, Tobias reminded himself. Iâm the one she wants to be with. Honoria loves me.
âIâll go up to see about your dinner, Tobias,â Honoria said, trying to maneuver around Justin. âYouâll come up very soon, wonât you?â
âAs soon as Tobias and I have a little discussion,â Justin answered before Tobias could say anything.
Tobias felt a spurt of anger. He forced it down.
All I have to do is translate these papers, Tobias thought. Then Honoria and I can be married and go away together. Weâll never have to see Justin again.
Until then, I must remember how much I owe him. How good heâs always been to me.
Honoria hurried out of the lab. Her haste made herclumsy. She bumped into Tobiasâs instrument table, knocking over a tray of sharp scalpels.
âOuch!â Honoria cried.
âHonoria, what is it?â Tobias said, hurrying forward. But Justin was closer.
âItâs nothing,â he said, quickly stepping in front of Tobias. âSheâs just cut herself. I donât think itâs very deep. Iâll take care of it.â
Justin pulled a snowy white handkerchief from his coat pocket and pressed it to Honoriaâs wound.
âHere,â he said. âThis should help stop the bleeding.â
Tobias could hear Honoriaâs unsteady breathing. âJustin,â she gasped. âYouâre pressing too hard.â
âNonsense, my dear,â Justin said. âThe pressure is what stops the bleeding. Remember, Iâm the doctor, so I ought to know.â
âLet go of her,â Tobias cried, springing forward.
âCalm down, Tobias,â Justin said sharply. âThereâs no reason for alarm. There, see? The bleeding has stopped.â
He whipped the handkerchief from Honoriaâs cut hand and stuffed it in his pocket. âYou can go up to dinner now, Honoria,â he continued. âTobias will be along in a moment.â
Honoria brushed past Justin. She laid a trembling hand on Tobiasâs arm. âTobias,â she said in a low voice. âI donât want you to stay here. I donât want to go back through that horrible passage alone. Come with me now, Tobias.â
Tobias didnât know what to do. Which was more important? His debt to Justin or his love for Honoria?
I wouldnât be able to marry Honoria if it wasnât forJustin, he thought. Heâs the one who made it possible for me to support myself. I donât have much. But what I have, I owe to Justin.
âI must stay to talk with Justin,â he answered. âTake one of my candles. Iâll come up as soon as I can.â
âOh, Tobias,â Honoria whispered. Her beautiful blue eyes filled with tears. Without another word, she took the candle and ran from the laboratory.
You better have a very good reason for keeping me here, Justin, Tobias thought. He hated to see Honoria so unhappy. Trying to keep hold of his temper, he turned to face Justin Fear.
Justin was hunched over Tobiasâs desk. He studied the notes Tobias had begun to make on the papers.
Heâs forgotten all about Honoria, Tobias thought.
âYouâve done it,
