husband isâ¦heâs very jealous.â
âApparently with good reason.â
James flushed. âIt wasnât like that!â
âIt never is.â
âThatâs unfair.â
âHmm. Let me guessâ¦sheâs unhappy and lonely and her husband never pays her any heed. I daresay she told you that this was the first time sheâd ever been unfaithful and you, being the quixotic, romantic fool that you are, believed her.â
James rubbed a hand over his face. âAt the time of the affair, I thought Sabrina wasâ¦well, I know now I was wrong. But Iâm caught. Her husband knows something happened. If he discovers it was me, Iâm doomed.â
âDonât return. Stay away from Italy until itâs all blown over.â
âI canât. I have too much at stake. I was in themiddle of a projectââ He glanced at her, then managed a smile. âI stand to lose far more than five thousand pounds if I stay away more than a few weeks.â
âWhat exactly does this blackmailer have over you?â
âLetters. Well, not letters. Poems, really.â
Verenaâs gaze widened. â Love poems?â
James managed a weak smile. âIâm quite good, you know.â
She had to chuckle at that. âI daresay you are. How did this blackmailer find the letters?â
âA month ago someone broke into Sabrinaâs room and stole the box where sheâd been keeping the verses.â
âDid they steal anything else?â
He shook his head. âNot a blasted thing. Whomever it was had to know exactly what they were looking for.â
âAre you sure they want money? It seems ludicrous they would send you here if that was their only objective.â
Jamesâs face creased with worry. âI know. I wondered ifâbut no. It has to be money. What else could they want?â
He had a point. âI suppose that leaves us with the question of âhow much?â Do you think they knew youâd come here, to my house?â
âSurely not. No one knows Iâm your brother.â
âWhat a mess.â
âI know. If I donât pay whatever they ask, this villain will turn everything over to Sabrinaâs husband. There will be nowhere to hide and all my workââ He placed his elbow on the table andrested his forehead in his hand. âEverything will be ruined. Iâll be humiliated.â
âBeing humiliated is the least of your worries if this man is as dangerous as you think he is.â
âHeâs killed three men for doing far less than what I have. The problem is that all of my capital is invested. Ver, if they ask for money, Iâm sunk. Everything I have is tied up.â
âHow long before they contact you?â
âIt should be any day now.â He swallowed a little convulsively. âWhat will we do?â
âThe right thing,â she said with a bravado she was far from feeling. âPerhaps, if Iâm very, very lucky, I can find a wealthy suitor who will marry me and hand over a large sum as a wedding gift.â
Sheâd been joking, trying to lighten the moment, but he immediately brightened. âPerfect! Are there any wealthy men hanging about? One you could finagle into an engagement?â
Verena had to laugh. âJames! I have no desire to sell my freedom for a few guineas. Not even for you.â
He tried to hide his disappointment. âOh. Of course not. Althoughâ¦you wouldnât have to actually marry anyone, you know. Just tempt and tease. Get him excited, then tell him you need some money for a modisteâs bill or some such nonsense andââ
At her lifted brows, he managed a weak grin. âI know, I know. Iâm just teasing. Father always said it would take a Greek god before you married again.â
That was sadly true. Though she had quite a few admirers, none were acceptable. Not evenhandsome, urbane Chase St.
