getting complicated, Rachel thought. But she decided to persevere. She had to know what was going on
if she was going to make any realistic plans for revenge. Obviously she would have to drop the possibility of getting
Chance into trouble with his boss. Abraham Chance was already in trouble with his boss and didn’t much care.
„Are you going to work for someone else?“ Rachel asked cautiously.
He glanced up from his oatmeal, obviously surprised by her interest in the subject. Rachel wondered if she’d
    moved too fast.
„I’m thinking of starting my own company,“ he said after a slight pause.
„A security firm like Dixon’s? One that specializes in corporate security work?“ Rachel asked too quickly.
„How did you know I was in that kind of work?“
She bit her lip and picked up her spoon. This sort of thing could get tricky. „Oh, something your boss said on the
phone. I believe he identified himself as head of a company called Dixon Security.“
    „Did he?“
Rachel coughed delicately. „Would you like some more toast?“
    „Sure.“
She got up quickly and went to the counter to shove two more slices of bread into the old toaster. „At least this
appliance works,“ she said with unwarranted enthusiasm.
„Yes, it does,“ he said. There was almost no inflection in his voice.
When she glanced back at him, she saw that he was watching her with an unreadable expression. „So,“ she forced
herself to go on brightly, „I’m just to say no to anyone else who calls?“
    „That’s right.“
„Are you expecting a lot of calls?“
„I’m expecting to be pestered by certain people. I shall rely on you to protect my privacy. Isn’t that part of a good
    housekeeper’s job?“
She wasn’t quite sure what to say to that. „Of course,“ she finally mumbled, turning back to the toaster.
„This arrangement can work both ways, you know,“ he finally said, his voice softening unexpectedly. That
particular tone sounded quite rusty, as if he wasn’t accustomed to trying to sound gentle and unthreatening.
Rachel swung around, startled. „What do you mean?“
His mouth curved slightly, and there was an oddly reassuring, very confident smile in his eyes. „I’m willing to
protect your privacy in exchange for your guarding mine.“
    „I don’t understand.“
„Don’t you?“ He shrugged again and picked up his coffee. „Well, we’ll give it time. Remind me before I go outside
this morning to give you a few warnings about the washing machine. It’s temperamental.“
„Somehow that doesn’t come as a surprise.“ Relieved to have the subject changed, Rachel pursued another topic.
„What are you planning to do with this house, Chance? Fix it up and sell it?“
„Fix it up and keep it. I told you this place was built by my great-great-grandfather. He was a little eccentric, but
after he struck it rich in the gold fields hereabouts he became a rich eccentric.“
    „That does make a difference.“
„You bet. He poured a lot of money into this place and named it Snowball’s Chance, which was what everyone said
his odds were of getting rich in California. He married a San Francisco lady and brought her here to live. Unfortunately,
my great-great-grandmother was not as fond of Snowball’s Chance as her husband was. She began complaining about
the lack of the kind of social life she’d enjoyed in San Francisco. She tried to persuade her husband to move back to
    the city.“
„And he refused to listen to her pleas?“ Rachel hazarded dryly.
    „How did you know?“
„I have a feeling excessive stubbornness and arrogance run in the male side of your family.“
Chance smiled wickedly. „I can understand great-great-grandfather’s feelings on the subject. Whining,
complaining women are irritating as hell.“
„I can assure you that whining, complaining men are no more pleasant,“ Rachel snapped. „I’ve met plenty of both.“
    Chance considered that carefully and
