hands and wrapped her arms around his neck. Then she put her lips to the
tanned skin of his throat and pressed gently against him. „Oh, Flynn. So are you.“
It was okay, Flynn heard a hammering voice in his veins say. It was all right. He wouldn’t endanger his
ultimate goal by making love to Angie tonight. No problem. She wanted him. She would come to him as
easily as a bird to its nest. All he had to do was lead her back to his room, lock the door and lay her down
on his bed. In his head he could see her there already.
The heat in his body seemed to be leaping out of control. Flynn grazed the tips of Angie’s breasts with
his palms and then slipped his hands around her to find the line of her spine.
Below on the beach the waves lapped at the sand in a primitive rhythm that echoed the heavy beat of
his blood. Everything in his mind that was not directly connected with Angie began to recede into the
distance. In a vague way he tried to remind himself of his purpose in being here, but he was already
deciding it could wait until morning.
Everything except Angie could wait until morning.
„Come with me.“ His voice sounded rough to his own ears. He wished he could make it smooth and
liquid. „Come with me, Angie. I want you tonight. I’ll make it good for you. I swear it. I’ll do whatever it
takes to make it perfect. Angie, let’s go back. Come with me, honey….“
He felt her shudder against him, and then she was pulling free. Her reluctance was obvious, but so was
the somewhat dazed determination in her face. She looked up at him as her hands slid down his chest and
slowly she shook her head.
„I’m sorry, Flynn. It’s too soon. I should never have let things go this far. Please forgive me for leading
you on.“ Her smile was tremulous, her eyes wide and pleading. „I’m supposed to be here on business, not
for a romantic fling. I got a little carried away, I guess.“ Hastily she adjusted her dress, turning toward the
sea as she pulled the material back up over her shoulders.
Behind her Flynn took a couple of slow breaths, aware that his hands were in fists at his sides. His
whole body felt coiled and tense. She couldn’t just call a halt like this. Could she? He’d felt her response;
knew she wanted him. Damn it, he was the one who was supposed to be directing this scene.
„Relax, Angie. It’s all right. You don’t have to be afraid of me.“ It was a struggle to find the words. He
wanted to pick her up and carry her back to his room and forget words altogether.
She glanced back at him over her shoulder. The moonlight illuminated her profile. Her eyes seemed very
large and strangely colorless in the night light. „I’m not afraid of you, Flynn. I haven’t been afraid of you
since the moment we met.“
„Angie, please. I want you to trust me.“
„I do trust you.“ She smiled again and put out a hand to touch his sleeve. „It’s myself and the situation I
don’t trust. This can’t go anywhere, can it, Flynn? I’ll be on my way home the day after tomorrow. And
you…you’ll be on your way back to wherever men in your profession are finding work these days. That
probably takes in a good portion of the globe, doesn’t it?“
„Is it what I do for a living that bothers you?“ he asked starkly, knowing she had skirted the issue more
than once during the past couple of days.
„It’s not any of my business.“ Her hand fell away from his arm. „But I’m not a good candidate for a
one-night stand, Flynn.“ Her mouth curved in wry humor. „I’d probably whine a lot the next morning. You
know, throw a tantrum and hurl recriminations. That sort of thing. The last thing you need while you’re on
vacation is a woman who stages a major scene at the airport when you’re trying to say goodbye. It would
be better for both of us if we kept this relationship businesslike.“
The sleek edge of anger knifed through him unexpectedly. That was supposed to be
