attacked Evie, and now I know what he did to you.” His body shook with anger. “Sometimes, I can’t contain the rage that fills me up. I want him dead. Painfully dead. So yeah, I understand where you were coming from. But you don’t need to run from me.”
“I don’t remember how not to run away,” she whispered, looking down in surprise as a tear fell from her face and onto the rocks.
Using his finger, he tipped her chin up and waited for her to look at him. “Let me remind you. Lean on me. I can be strong enough for both of us until you remember.”
“What about children?” Her voice wavered. She was scared of what he would say.
“What about them? Honey, just because you can’t get pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t have children. Come on, you were a teacher; you know there are too many kids out there who don’t have a home. That doesn’t mean you can’t love them any less than if it was a child you’d conceived and carried.”
“Where do we go from here?” She was scared. Scared of what he was going to say. Could she do it? It would mean losing control, something she had grown to depend on. It was the only thing she had. If she controlled everything, nothing would be a surprise.
He tightened his arms around her. “Sweetheart, wherever we want to go.” After a brief second, she relaxed in his arms. It felt so good to be held. So good to be held by him. The years between the last time she was in his arms and now seemed to melt away. She remembered this; she craved this. Looking up at him, she was reminded of why she’d fallen for him so quickly. Her body came alive in his arms, and when he leaned down to capture her lips, she didn’t protest. Melting into him, the walls she had built around her heart slowly started to crumble.

She walked around his room touching everything he touched. Trying to get more of an idea of what he was like. Since she still had the job as a maid, she could get into his room. Knowing it was too early for anyone else to be up who might look in and see her, she lifted his pillow and buried her face in it. She needed to know what made him tick, what was going to be the one thing that would take him down, make him break completely.
When she was changing the sheets, she felt a lump between the mattresses and had to stop herself from shouting in excitement. Quickly, she pulled a book out and went into the bathroom to take a picture of each page, vaguely noticing when the alarm sounded on her phone. She only had a few more minutes before he’d return. Flipping the pages, she didn’t want to miss out on anything, this would be perfect for her files. Wanting to torment him further, she put a picture she had taken from inside the restaurant the other night of the three women and slid it inside his journal. She couldn’t wait to see what his reaction would be.
She had just returned the book to its hiding place when she heard his footsteps coming to the door. Standing up, she turned to face him, her whole body shaking with excitement.

For the rest of the day, while they waited for Evie and Anthony to come back to the house, Kat tried to stay away from Jackson. She wanted to keep their relationship separate from everything else. Jackson didn’t like it, but she knew he’d do it. Feeling bad playing upon his feelings toward her, she tried to keep the guilt at bay knowing they didn’t need to add another complication to the situation. Besides, who knew how Evie would react to the fact.
She sat up in her room alone, watching the waves roll in, feeling emotionally wrecked. The grudge against Jeremy was so strong and she had held onto it for so long, she wasn’t sure if she could ever let it go and have any chance of happiness. Seeing Lexi’s glow every day did nothing to help. She wanted to know what it felt like to have life growing inside her. The ache in her heart from the loss wouldn’t go away and having Jackson around seemed to make it worse, but she
