been butter at one time.
âI donât have any milk, if thatâs what youâre looking for,â he muttered.
She gaped at him. âYou have hundreds of cows on this ranch, and you donât have any milk?â
âIt isnât a dairy farm,â he said.
âA cow is a cow!â
âIf you want the damned milk, go milk one of them, then!â
She put her hands on her hips and glared at him. He scowled back. Eventually, she gave in with a sigh and put the cups on the table.
âThatâs what I like most about you,â he said as she sat down gingerly in one of the rickety old chairs.
Her eyes came up. âWhat?â
He smiled slowly, and his blue eyes darkened, glittered. âYou fight me.â
Her skin tingled at the way he said it. Before she thought, she said, âYou didnât like it last night.â
His smile faded. He sighed and lifted the cracked mug to his lips. âI was drunk last night.â
âWhy?â
He shrugged. âThings got on top of me. I started thinking about how alone I wasâ¦.â His eyes shot up, pinning hers. âI didnât expect to see you today. I thought youâd never speak to me again.â
She fidgeted uncomfortably. âWe all get depressed sometimes, even me. Itâs all right, no harm done.â She touched her lower lip with her tongue. âWell, no permanent harm, anyway,â she added dryly.
âWhat you told Patty was true,â he said.
âI didnât really mean that, or what I called you last night,â she said, watching him. âYouâre not an unattractive man, Carson.â
âPull the other one,â he said curtly and put his cup down to light another cigarette. âIâve finally got a little money, and Iâm working on some investments that will pay a good dividend. But thereâs nothing about me that would attract a woman, physically or intellectually, and you know it.â
She caught her breath. Did he really believe that? Her eyes wandered slowly over the lean, tough length of him, the powerful muscles of his arms and chest, the narrow flat stomach and long legs. He was devastating physically. Even his craggy face was appealing, if it were shaved and his hair trimmed. She remembered suddenly what Patty had said about how heâd be in bed, and she turned crimson.
He looked up in time to catch that blush and he frowned. âWhat brought that on?â
She wondered what heâd say if she admitted that she and Patty had been wondering how he was in bed. âNothing,â she said, âjust a stray thought.â
âTwenty-six, and you still blush like a virgin,â he murmured, watching her. âAre you one?â he asked, smiling faintly.
âCarson Joseph Wayne!â she exclaimed.
His blue eyes searched her gray ones. âI didnât realize you knew my middle name.â
She toyed with her coffee cup. âIt was on the deed, when I sold you that ten-acre parcel that used to be part of Uncleâs land.â
âWas it?â He sipped some more of his coffee. âYou still havenât answered me. Will you teach me?â
She went hot all over at the way he said it. âCarson, any woman who wanted you wouldnât mind the way you areâ¦â she began diplomatically.
âThis one would,â he said harshly.
She was suddenly jealous and didnât know why. How ridiculous! She touched her temple with a long finger. âWellâ¦â
âIâm not stupid,â he said shortly. âI can learn.â
âOh, all right,â she said with equal curtness.
He seemed to relax a little. âGreat. Where do we start?â
Her eyes wandered over him. God help her, it would take a miracle. âYouâll need some new clothes,â she said. âA haircut, a shaveâ¦â
âWhat kind of clothes?â
âShirts and slacks and jeans, and a suit or
