âItâs my cousin, Lisa,â he said. âThe guy who was stalking her in Meridian has found her here.â

âOh, no,â Wanda Nell said. âHow did he find her?â
âSomebody at the hospital where she used to work.â Jackâs face was set in grim lines. âWhen Lisa started getting phone calls again, she said she called around at the hospital in Meridian and found out a cop had been asking questions about her. She figures somebody told him sheâd moved to Tullahoma.â
âDidnât she tell them that the guy stalking her is a cop?â
Jack shrugged. âShe only told a couple of people at the hospital where she was moving. One of them must have slipped up somehow.â
âCome on and sit down,â Wanda Nell said, leading Jack to the counter. The few tables in the open part of the restaurant were occupied. âLet me get you some ice tea.â
âI could use a stiff shot of bourbon,â Jack said as he followed Wanda Nell and sat down. âIâm so angry about all this.â
âActually, I can get you some if you really want it,â Wanda Nell said. She could raid the liquor stash set aside for the party.
Jack shook his head, smiling briefly. âNo, really, tea is fine. I was just talking.â
âWhatâs Lisa going to do?â Wanda Nell said as she poured tea into an ice-filled glass. She set it in front of Jack. âIs she going to move again?â
âNo,â Jack said after a sip of his tea. âAt least, not for a while, anyway. She doesnât want to run anymore. At this rate, sheâd have to move to the other side of the country to get away from this jerk, and she doesnât want to do that.â
âI donât blame her,â Wanda Nell said. âShe should be able to live where she wants to and not have to worry about some piece of slime like that.â She shook her head. âI donât know whatâs worse, a guy like that stalking a poor girl, or marrying her and killing her for the insurance.â
âWhat on earth are you talking about?â Jack stared at her.
Wanda Nell could have kicked herself. She couldnât believe sheâd let that slip out. She glanced around. No one was sitting close to Jack. She leaned forward and spoke in a low tone. âItâs this guy theyâre having the bachelor party for. Mayrene told me he was married twice before, and both his wives died in accidents.â She snorted. âExcept nobody really thinks they were accidents.â
âAnd this guy is a cop?â Jack asked.
âYeah,â Wanda Nell said. âCan you believe it?â
âI would have said it was hard to believe, before I heard about what Lisa was going through because of a cop. But now Iâm willing to believe just about anything.â Jackâs right hand tightened around his tea glass.
âWhen did this happen?â
âJust an hour ago,â Jack said. âIâve been with Lisa, trying to calm her down, since not long after I called you to make sure you were up.â
âWhere is she now?â
âAt my house,â Jack said. âSheâll be okay there for now, but it probably wonât take the guy long to find her. I donât know what weâre going to do. I think she should call the police, but right now thereâs just no talking to her. Maybe when she calms down sheâll be more willing to listen to me.â
Wanda Nell placed a hand over his fist. âI know itâs rough on you, honey, because youâre trying to help her. Youâve just got to be patient with her. I think what we need to do right now is get Lisa to a safe place, somewhere this guy wouldnât think of looking for her. That will make her feel better.â
âBut where?â Jack asked. âOut of town somewhere? She has to work.â
âI know,â Wanda Nell said. She surveyed the room again.
