“Then…I don’t know,” I grumbled.
“Mr. Hunter? You don’t think he would do something like this?”
My eyes shifted up and I narrowed them at him. “I told you, no ! Shit. I don’t fuckin’ know. Who knows?”
There was a knock on th e door and the officer rose from his chair, his keys jingling against his leg. He stepped out in the hall and shut the door. I sat there thinking about everything. My stomach turned and bubbled, and every once in a while I would break down into a fit of tears. One minute I would calmly answer his questions, the next I would start screaming and cursing at him, banging my fists on the table and demanding he let me leave. Brooke was like a sister to me. I just wanted to curl up into the fetal position and scream until all my strength was gone.
The policeman stepped back int o the room with a perplexed look on his face. His sat down at the table and stared at me, his lips slightly parted and his thick eyebrows furrowed down.
Clearing his throat, he said, “Mr. Hunter’s car was found on the north side of town. It had been burned and we believe he and Ms. Davis were inside.” He watched me, wanting to see the reaction I’d have to that statement.
I fell speechless. My jaw hung loosely open and I lowered my head to my chest.
“I think – ” he twisted his pen in his hands. “I think we have all the information we need from you, Ms. LaRaine.” He nodded and rose from his chair.
“Wait!” I curled my feet under the metal legs of the chair and gripped tightly onto the table. “What do you mean you think they were inside? How can you not know?”
“I can’t discuss that with you, Ms. LaRaine. I appreciate your cooperation and am terribly sorry for your loss.” He shot a well-practiced, sympathetic smile at me, unable to hide the confusion in his eyes.
“No!” I shouted, slamming my fist down onto the table. “You can’t do this to me. You can’t hold me in here for hours, asking me questions , and then just let me go without telling me what happened to her! Was it her, or not?”
The man stared at me before grabbing the handle of the door.
“Did you hear me , you asshole? Tell me what happened to my friend!”
The officer drew in a long breath. I watched his fingers tighten on the knob and he closed his eyes, trying to control the anger that my name-calling caused. He shook his head, and said, “I’m sorry,” as he pulled the door closed behind him.

    Chapter Four
I woke up to Gavin reaching across my lap to fasten my seatbelt. My eyes strained to focus, and I realized that those dreams weren’t dreams. All those things had actually happened. I was on a plane, running from – I wasn’t even sure what we were running from.
Gavin’s mouth curved up into a sweet smile. “ We’re about to land, love.” He kissed my cheek tenderly and sat back in his seat. Grabbing my hand, he rubbed his thumb across it slowly, reassuringly.
When the wheels hit the pavement , the cabin jumped and Gavin squeezed my hand, causing me to look up at him. A serious look had fallen over his eyes. “You cannot leave my side. For any reason. I want you to keep your hand on me at all times.” His plump lip rolled underneath his teeth. “I can’t risk losing you.”
A tendril of hair had fallen in front of his face and I push ed it away. I had so many questions and I was beyond confused but simply said, “Okay.”
When we were instructed to exit the plane , Gavin stood up and pulled the strap to his duffel bag across his chest. Reaching back, he grabbed onto me.
“Don’t let go of me. If I need to use my hand and must let go of yours, I want you to grab onto my side, my arm, my back – some part of me where I can still feel the warmth of you r skin. Understood, love?”
I tried to swallow down the fear that was swelling inside me. “Yes.”
Gavin’s grip tightened on my hand and we walked down the aisle to exit.
My heart was drumming, pounding furiously. I
