you might have your
reservations but I can promise you, I am not here to tell you how to
live your life. I’m just here to make sure that your baby gets
a fighting chance and that he or she gets to live,” she said.
Julie smiled as her gaze fell to the floor.
“ You
know what, I’m really happy to hear that,” she said as
Steven came back into the room with Consuela. She turned around and
looked at Steven.
“ Chloe,
this is Consuela. She’ll show you to your room,” he said.
Chloe looked at Julie and smiled before she walked away with
Consuela. Steven took a long deep breath and walked to the couch
before he took a seat next to her. He already knew that she was
prepared to lash out at him. He had even decided on what answers he
would give first. There was no way she was going to just let him have
it without hearing his part out. She looked at him and opened her
mouth to speak but he was faster. “First, you have to hear me
out,” he said quickly. She looked at him and crossed her arms
on her chest.
“ Okay.
Go on,” she said as she looked at him.
“ Baby,
when the doctor told us that the chances of us ever being parents
were slim, I admit that I was sad but I felt even worse when I saw
how distraught you were. It was like having kids was your whole life
and thinking that you couldn’t have any was literally slicing
you up inside,” he said. She looked at him and shook her head.
“And then that day I came home and you were acting all odd. I
was stupid. I should have seen it…I mean, you always take wine
with your dinner but that day you…” he paused and smiled
before shaking his head. She looked at him and wondered what he was
trying to say. “That day, you made me the happiest man in the
world and I was so worried that any little thing I did would put you
and the baby in danger.” Julie’s heart softened. She had
never seen this side of Steven. The soft side of him. “I will
do anything and everything to make sure that baby comes into this
world. And if that means getting you round the clock medical care,
then that is exactly what I will do,” he finally said. She
looked at him and smiled.
“ That’s
fine,” she said.
Steven
gave her a questioning look. “What?”
“ That
was not what I wanted to talk about,” she said looking at him.
“I wanted to talk about us. You and me,” she said.
Steven
was even more surprised. “What about us?”
“ Baby,
I miss you…I miss us. I miss being intimate with you,”
she said.
He
looked at her and shook his head.
“ Baby,
I can’t. I might hurt you.”
She
shook her head and rolled her eyes at him. “That’s all
bullshit and you know it.”
Steven
looked at her and raised an eyebrow.
“ What?”
You know that you are the most important thing in my life, right?”
he said as he looked at her. She took a long deep breath and shook
her head. She was not really feeling like the most important…anything
at that point. It was like her baby was now the only thing Steven
thought about and it was not wrong. It’s just that she needed
to know that having a family would not affect them as a couple.
“ Baby,
you treat me like a pariah,” she said.
He looked
at her and raised an eyebrow.
“ A
pariah? Isn’t that word a little too big?” he asked.
“ No,
that is exactly what I feel like…I dress up, get my hair done,
put on sexy lingerie but you never even look at me like you want me
anymore.”
“ Why
would you even think of that?” he asked as he looked at her.
“ Because
Steven, we haven’t had sex in God knows how long and even when
I initiate it, you look like watching a rugby game is more
important.” Steven opened his mouth to talk but she put her
hand up. “You don’t even like rugby,” she said
matter of factly. She looked at him and brushed off a tear. “So,
what? I’m supposed to wait for nine freaking months before I
suck you?”
He looked
at her and shook his head.
“ Baby,
what if you have a
