feeling of something terrible happening to her plagued him, but unlike their month-long courtship, her presence over the last few days seemed to make all of his emotions go haywire.
He didn’t know if it was because they’d finally slept together, or because they hadn’t slept together again, but insanity seemed next on his horizon.
As the distance between them grew, his heart ached. If it hurt so much to leave her for a couple of hours, how would he survive when it was safe for her to return home? He didn’t want to let her go, but he couldn’t force her to stay, and she wanted to leave.
The previous day, he’d kept his distance and left her alone in an effort to guard his heart. Giving into his desire one time had been a mistake, and he didn’t trust himself not to try and seduce her again. His dick had been in a semi-hard state since she appeared on his doorstep, and he desperately wanted to strip off her clothes and spend the day fucking her in every room of the house.
God damn! Get a grip man!
He needed to tend to his errands and get back to Becca, but he had to release some tension or he’d go crazy. He wanted to spend the day sliding in and out of his mate’s perfect pussy, or kill the perpetrator that had a hand in trying to harm her.
    Neither were viable options.
He’d already interrogated the suspect, and as Lead Enforcer it was his job to protect the clan. He’d been within his rights to kill the cat that had tried to break into his home, but he hadn’t seen the other man commit a crime, and therefore had no right to kill him.
    Nor did anyone else.
Delivering him back to his alpha would help maintain the newly discovered peace between the bears and the cats, or it would reveal the cats to be traitors and murderers of innocents. Either way, the meeting the following day needed to happen.
Despite the warnings from his alpha, he maneuvered his SUV toward the gym. Pumping iron and hitting the heavy bag for thirty minutes ought to take the edge off and help him relax.
An hour later, he returned to Becca’s apartment to check the progress of the outside video cameras he’d told his men to install, and then he stopped in his office to check on his private security accounts.
As he sifted through his email, he received a call from one of the men assigned to watch the prisoner for the second rotation of the day.
“Price,” he answered on the first ring.
“It’s Sloan. Wagner is out cold and the prisoner has escaped.”
    Shit!
    “Where’s Montgomery?” he barked.
    “I don’t know, I just got here.”
“Get Wagner the help he needs and secure the premises,” he said, shutting down his computer. “Then try to locate Montgomery. If you find him, don’t let him out of your sight.”
Logan hung up, pressed the button to call Jacob and ran to his vehicle. The man didn’t answer and he tried the call again as he sped through town toward his sister’s café.
He received an incoming call from Layla at the same time he reached Jacob’s voicemail for the second time.
    “What’s going on?” he barked.
“You need to get over here. Now,” Layla demanded. “They got to her, Logan. I don’t know how, but they got to her. I’ve called a healer, but it’s bad. We’re upstairs.”
“I’ll be there in five,” he said, and ended the call.
Please let her be okay. Please let her be okay.
He could live without her if he had to, but he’d never survive if his mate died in his arms.

    ***

Logan arrived at his sister’s shop four minutes later and parked in the back, next to the stairs that led up to her apartment. He traveled up the flight of steps two at a time and came face to face with Jacob.
The man had unshed tears in his eyes and Logan felt as if he’d been staked through the heart. Jacob had been his best friend for nearly twenty years and he’d never seen the man cry a single tear.
“The cat escaped,” Logan said, in full business mode. “Send a message to the group
