warm?â Marie asked. âWell, thatâs where we found them. Theyâd drunk the last of the cocoa out of the bucket and were sitting in front of the stove pretending to read the blackboard.â
âDid you wake Mr Jones?â
âHe just muttered something about the Prime Minister and went back to sleep. We filled the stove with wood again so heâd keep warm. Halfway home, you know where the track goes under the black trees?â We all nodded. âWell,â said Marie, âthatâs where the Urewera wolf was waiting. It was higher than Hubert. Its eyes glowed in the dark, and do you know what?â
âWhat?â we shrilled.
Marie dropped her voice. âYouâll never guess!â
âWhat?â we shrieked.
âIts face is tattooed!â
We all burst out crying. âA Tattooed Wolf!â Aunt Effie had always told us they were the worst kind. âWhat did you do?â we screamed at Marie and Peter.
âWe dropped the halberd and the blunderbuss.â
âYou dropped the halberd and the blunderbuss!â
âIt was the cleverest thing we could think to do. It saved our lives because, while the Tattooed Wolf bent down and scrabbled around trying to pick them up, Hubert galloped home,â said Peter. âMarie and I fell off as we got near the house. Itâs very difficult stayingon a horse when youâre wearing armour.â
âIt doesnât matter. You rescued the little ones!â we said. âAnd weâre all safe.â
âYou think weâre safe?â screeched Daisy. âWith a Tattooed Wolf outside armed with the halberd and the blunderbuss? A Tattooed Wolf that said The Name We Dare Not Say!â
We looked at each other. Weâd all been pretending we hadnât heard it say that name.
And just then a terrible voice whispered through the keyhole. âOpen the door, Euphemia!â
Chapter Four
The Battle with the Tattooed Wolf
Peter ticked off on his fingers. âAunt Effie said to screw steel shutters over the doors and windows,â he whispered.
âWe did that,â we whispered back.
âCaulk the walls.â
âWe did that.â
âSchenam them with whale oil and shell lime.â
âWe did that.â
âTar them, felt them, sheathe them with totara.â
âWe did that.â
âThen caulk and tar the totara, just like our scow.â
âWe did that!â
Peter counted his fingers and nodded. âThatâs the lot!â In a louder voice he said, âAnd if anyone tries to hack down the door with the halberd, or blow it down with the blunderbuss, heâd better watch out.â
âOpen the door,â whispered the terrible voice through the keyhole, âor Iâll hack it down with the halberd!â
âDown with the halberd,â Alwyn answered back.
âDonât say I didnât warn youâ¦â The voice was so cold, frost crystals formed around the keyhole.
âDidnât warn you,â Alwyn repeated.
âDonât you dare answer me back!â An icicle hung down from the keyhole.
âAnswer me back!â
âNobody gives cheek to the Tattooed Wolf!â
âCheek to the Tattooed Wolf!â
âAll right â take this!â
âTake this!â echoed Alwyn, and there was a colossal clang on the door.
âOw!â somebody screamed, and the halberd clattered on the steps outside.
Alwyn called back, âOw!â He winced and shook his hands above his head. âLike Mr Jones â with the strap!â he whispered. We spluttered and stuck our hands over our mouths. Lizzie snorted and laughed aloud.
âDonât you dare laugh at me!â bellowed the Tattooed Wolf.
âLaugh at me!â said Alwyn. We rolled on our backs, kicked our feet in the air, and let our breath go in one enormous laugh. âIâll show you!â the voice screamed.
âIâll show
