breakfast in silence the next morning and it
was only when Greg was leaving that he spoke.
“I’ll see you
tonight.”
“Yeah, have a good day,” I
replied.
It wasn’t long after that
I followed him out of the apartment and went to catch a ride to the
newspaper office. I wondered what Jeannie would say about me not
returning after the interview the previous afternoon, but it
quickly became clear that she hadn’t come back to the office either
after the team meeting she attended.
“So…, how did the
interview go?” she asked.
“It went well,” I said. “I
spent around an hour and a half with Sam Lawrence and got to see
the new range of underwear.”
“What’s it like?” she
asked.
“The designs are really,
really nice,” I said enthusiastically. “I think it will be a
success when it hits the stores.”
“When does that happen?”
Jeannie went on.
“The unveiling date is
planned for two weeks today,” I told her then reached inside my bag
to get her list of questions and my notebook. “I didn’t get the
chance to write anything up yesterday, but I’ll do it now and pass
it to you when I’m finished.”
“Good,” she said and
nodded.
I went to my desk to get
started and it was almost twelve by the time I was happy with what
I’d written.
“That’s the Lawrence
Lingerie article finished,” I told Jeannie.
“Could you print out a
copy for me,” she said and got to her feet. “I’ll be out of the
office this afternoon, but I can check it over tonight and speak to
you about it tomorrow.”
“Of course,” I agreed and
brought the article up on my computer screen to print it
out.
I took it over to
Jeannie’s desk and she gave me a piece of paper in
return.
“That’s some other tasks
to be getting on with this afternoon.”
I nodded and returned to
my desk to look through what was required.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,”
Jeannie said five minutes later. “I can’t imagine you’ll need me,
but my phone will be switched on at times this afternoon, so just
keep trying if you do have to get in touch.”
“Sure,” I said and smiled
at her before she headed for the exit and disappeared from
sight.
I decided to have some
lunch before getting on with my afternoon’s work and it was around
an hour before I got back. There was a package sitting on my desk
and I frowned as I sat down to look at it. I picked it up and
turned it over, but the only writing on it was my name.
“Must have been delivered
by hand,” I mused as I ripped the brown paper off to find a smart
white box with a bow on top.
The first thought that
came to mind was that Greg was trying to make things up with me
after the recent frostiness between us, but he hadn’t been in a
mood that morning where I thought he would be buying me presents. I
let out a sigh as I opened the box and my eyes opened wide when I
saw what was inside.
“Fucking hell,” I let out
then glanced around.
No one was close enough to
hear the curse and my gaze returned to the red panties with white
trim and bow sitting in the box. There was no doubt in my mind now
about who the package was from. I lifted the panties and matching
bra out and knew it was the same set I’d been holding the day
before. It was only when I went to return them to the box that I
saw the small card. My hand was shaking as I picked it out and read
it.
‘They will look good on
your perfect figure. SL.’
The initials of the man
I’d met for the very first time the day before. I sat reading the
card then on a whim turned it over.
‘Make sure you’re wearing
them on Friday. Carlton Hotel Bar. 20.30.’
“Oh shit,” I let out and
put my hand over my mouth as I read the message again.
Sam Lawrence said he
wanted to see me again soon and it was obvious that he meant it.
The turmoil was flooding my mind as I slid my hand up over my eyes
and wondered what the hell I was going to do.
