because they were so short handed.
“Matthew , remember what I told you about making your body big and strong so you can go out fishing with your dad?” Amari asked gently.
    He sniffed. “Uh-huh.”
“Well , this will help and we’ll sing the song while I do it . S o you’ll just feel a little stick , ok ay ?” she said. “How about you start out.”
“Ok ay .” Matthew took a deep breath. “ There was an old man who swallow ed a fly. I don’t know why he swallowed a fly…”
Amari sang along with him while she prepared the needle and his mom held him in her lap against her breast. She gave him the shot as they sang about the man swallowing a spider to catch the fly and his breath only hitched on a few words. B y the time they were getting to the bird , she had a Band-A id on his arm and a lollipop in his hand.
“All done , Matthew . Y ou did a great job!” Amari said with a smile. “Now if I recall , the orange is your favorite flavor right?
“Yes it is, Nurse Amari, thank you.” He beamed up at her.
“Now how about a hug and you get on home to play?” she said.
He threw his little arm around her neck and she knew exactly why she was a nurse ―t o bring comfort to everyone . A nd days like this , her job was great. She took a bottle of Tylenol from the medicine cabinet. Most of the clinic patients were not able to even pay their bills . The doctors in charge always kept a supply of medicines that co u ld be handed out to those less fortunate in the small town .
“Mom , you give him some of this if he gets a little feverish overnight , ok ay? ” Amari handed her the bottle. “ Follow the directions on the back of the box , and fill the measuring cup to that amount every four hours.”
“Yes , Nurse Montgomery . T hank you.” Mathew’s mother took the bottle and slipped it in her bag.
She walked them out of the patient room , and the receptionist at the front desk buzzed them out the front door. They had to hav e security in place because many of the men in town were addicts and were known to try breaking in the doctor ’ s office and pharmacy to fuel their addiction. Alcohol was illegal , and sometimes they even drank Listerine to get the affect that liquor would give them. She leaned over the front desk and snagged two pieces of chocolate from a jar that the receptionist kept near her phones.
“You’re going to spoil your dinner , ” t he olde r women said with mock severity .
“Chocolate can never spoil anything , Madge . ” A mari opened t he wrapper and popped the candy into her mouth .
Madge chuckled. “You’ve been in a perpetual state of happiness for the last week. May I ask whose the lucky man? I know it ’ s no one in town . I would’ve already got the scoop . S o it must be that elusive gentleman who bough t the old B rooks cabin. Your truck ’ s been over that way a lot.”
Amari’s jaw dropped. “ Holy crap . D oes everyone in this town know everything?”
“Honey , this isn’t the big city , it ’ s Hiko ” Madge smiled. “But at least it ’ s not none of the scuzzballs who frequent the bars in tow n. They are all either married or just plain dumb as a box of rocks. ”
Amari laughed. “You don’t pull any punches , do you , Madge ? ”
“ My mister will tell you the same thing,” Mad g e replied. “It’s five and we’re closing up . I’m taking that you won’t be at your place tonight . I f not you could come over and have stew with me and the hubby.” Just then the phone rang and Madge picked it up. “Hiko Family Physicians . H ow may I direct your call?” She listened for a moment an d then handed Amari the phone. “ It ’ s for you , sweetie pie.”
“Hello?” Amari said into the receiver. No answer , and she repeated the word. There was still no answer , just the click as the person on the other end of the phone hung up. It made her uncomfortable , but she shrugged the prickly sensation in the back of her neck away and gave her
