good thing when they see it. If this were to catch on, Iâd be rich. Then my dad could retire, and I could hire a maid, install a swimming pool, pay someone to take my sister awayââ
Dunc handed him his clothes. âGet dressed. We donât have a lot of time.â

Amos let the big metal door slam shut behind him.
âShhh!â Dunc glared at him. âWe donât want anybody to know weâre in here.â
âI thought you said no one would be up at this hour.â
âFirst rule of surveillanceâyou can never be too careful.â
âWhere did you learn that? The Handy Home School of Spying?â
âCute. Stay behind me, and try to be quiet.â
Dunc inched his way along the walltoward the office. Amos followed, even though he was sure the whole thing was a waste of time.
âWait.â Dunc held up his hand. âIâll see if the coast is clear.â
Amos rolled his eyes. âWhatever.â
Dunc moved to the door. He motioned for Amos to come closer.
âAre we through playing secret agent yet?â
Dunc clapped his hand over Amosâs mouth. A voice was coming from inside the office. Someone was talking on the phone.
âYes, is this the Grenfield Insurance Agency?â
The boys sat on their heels and waited.
âHello, Mr. Grenfield. This is Mange Roper. Listen, I was just calling to double-check the terms on that policy I have with you on the Road Kill band.⦠I wanted to make sure that if the concert is canceled for any reason, Iâll still be able to collect the insurance money.â¦â
Duncâs eyes widened. He pointed to thebalcony. The boys tiptoed away from the office and then blasted up the balcony steps and out the door.
Amos stopped to catch his breath, but Dunc kept going. âHey, wait for me.â
Dunc didnât slow down. He jumped on his bike and took off. He was already in his room making plans when Amos staggered in.
âWhereâs the fire?â Amos plopped on Duncâs bed. âThe way youâre acting, youâd think it was a matter of life and death.â
âIt might be, Amos. Didnât you hear Mange on the phone? He collects insurance money every time the band canât go on. Thereâs probably no telling what he might do to keep them from appearing tonight.â
âSo go tell Roy. Heâll call the police, and theyâll put Mange away. Simple.â
âI canât just go tell Roy a thing like this. Heâs known Mange a long time. Heâll want proof.â
âIf he waits for much more proof, he may wind up in the hospital.â
âThereâs only one thing to do.â Dunc stood up. âWe have to keep an eye on the band until after the concert.â
âYou mean
you
have to keep an eye on them. I have a date, remember?â
âBut Amosââ
Amos held up his hand. âIt wonât work. Nothing you can say will convince me. Thanks to you, my bedroom is being ransacked by total strangers. Iâve done my duty for the day. Iâm not giving up a date with Melissa for anything.â
âNot even if they call you up onstage?â
Amos shook his head. âNot even for that.â
âMaybe we donât have to watch them all day. Maybe we can stop Mange if we just go down there a little early and hang around. He wonât try anything with witnesses.â
âHow early is early?â
âNot too early.â
âDunc.â
âA few hours. You can take your flowers and tux with you. Itâll be fine. You wanted to get there before Melissa. Whatâs a fewhours? This way at least youâll be on time.â
âIâd have to get ready for my date in a public bathroom.â
âIâll stick an âout of orderâ sign on the door. Itâll be fine. Trust me.â
âYou had to say that. âTrust me.â You had to say that, didnât
