ground in front of her and propped his chin up with his hands. âWhatâs a celebrity?â
âSomeone whoâs famous. Like an actor on TV or in movies.â
âLike Dora?â
âSheâs a cartoon character.â
Carson dropped down next to his brother. âNuh-huh. Sheâs real. Daddy took us to a show last year, and she was on stage and everything.â
âRight. Iâm talking about human famous people.â
Carson nodded. âSo you know âem? Famous people?â
Addison leaned toward them. âCan you two keep a secret?â
Their blond heads bobbed like those weird little dolls.
âIâm sort of a celebrity myself.â
Jason popped back up. âNo kiddinâ? Who are you?â
âMy name is Addison. I was on a TV show.â
âWhat show?â Carson asked.
âItâs called House of Fashion .â
Their eyes widened like saucers. âGamma watches it every week,â Jason announced. âYouâre the mean lady!â
The mean lady . Pretty much summed up her entire career in a nutshell.
âYou donât look mean,â Carson said.
Jason nodded his agreement. âYouâre pretty. Like a princess.â
She ruffled his hair. âNo oneâs called me a princess in years. At least not as a compliment.â
He grinned. âDaddy says weâre pistols.â
âI donât doubt it.â
Something about their innocence made her heart suddenly lighter. Addison had risen early to visit her aunt and meet with the doctors, and the update had been disheartening. The upshot was Aunt Ruth would be in the hospital for another week before being moved to a rehab facility for therapy. Which meant Addison had the place to herself for the foreseeable future. Even though she shouldâve been grateful for the solitude, the thought of rambling around her auntâs house alone was depressing.
âWere you takinâ a nap?â Carson asked. âWe donât have to take them anymore.â
âI didnât mean to fall asleep. I guess my body hasnât adjusted to East Coast time, though. I came out here to think and must have dozed off.â
Jason scrunched up his nose. âWhereâd you come from?â
âI live in California. A long way from here. Where is your house, anyway?â
Carson narrowed his eyes. âWeâre not supposed to tell strangers where we live.â
âIs the house on this block at least?â
The boys shared a silent look and Addison knew there was some kind of mysterious twin communication happening.
Jason answered. âNo.â
âSo, youâre passing through?â
Another look.
Jason again. âWeâre stayinâ at Gammaâs house next door till Daddy gets off work.â
Next door?
âWhatâs your last name?â
Theyâd forgotten to be suspicious. âThomas,â they said in unison.
Addison knew the name. A memory of three teenage boys flashed through her mind. Ethan, Jake, and Matthew. The Thomas brothers had been quite the heartthrobs back then. Golden and beautiful, sheâd spent hours watching them from whatever window gave her the best view. She remembered theyâd liked to pull off their shirts and toss a football around in the yard. Sheâd been the happiest thirteen-year-old on the planet on those days.
She wondered which brother could claim father to these two boys.
âYou stay with your Gamma a lot?â Addison asked, shamelessly probing for more information.
Jason nodded. âWhen Daddy works late. Sometimes we play at our cousinsâ house. Daddy says weâd blow up the house if we stayed home alone.â
Addison grinned. âDo you get into trouble a lot?â
âWe were trying to launch our rocket,â Carson said, as if that explained everything.
âWe did it outside and everything, but it went zoom right through the window,â Jason said,
