Trudi said with a smile. âHe played on the varsity team in college.â
âReally?â a deep voice called out, joining them. âI like watching soccer almost as much as racing. Canât always find a game on TV, though.â
Dan smiled as Meg introduced him to the latest newcomer. âDan Eagan, meet Robert Stuart. He owns Bobâs Gas and Gears and is the man you want to know if youâve got car trouble. He can fix anything under the hood.â
âNice to meet you, Robert.â Dan grasped the other manâs hand and shook it.
âCall me Bob.â
âBob used to race stock cars, had a winning season back in â81,â Sheriff Wallace told him.
âMy dadâs a huge NASCAR fan,â Dan said. âI grew up beneath the hood of his â65 Corvette. In my spare time, I like to tinker with engines.â
Bobâs eyes narrowed as if he were concentrating. âBig block⦠carbureted or fuel-injected?â
Dan grinned and Megâs belly did that fluttery thing again. There was something so boy-like about Danâs open smile, as if he hadnât a care in the world and was ready to experience everything all at once. Her dad got that way about cars too.
âMy grandfather never liked a fuel-injected engine,â Dan answered. âHe preferred carbureted engines; dad still does.â
âFully restored?â Bob asked.
âCherry condition,â Dan answered.
âCar talk,â Meg said to Honey B. and Miss Trudi. âGood thing my dadâs not here or else weâd never talk about anything else.â
The ladies laughed and made room as the McCormack sisters joined them. âDan, I hate to interrupt your manly discussion,â Meg said, âbut Iâd like you to meet Peggy and Katie McCormack.â
He nodded to the sisters. âOwners of the Apple Grove Diner?â
When they smiled, he confided, âIâm real partial to pecan pie.â
Peggyâs smile was friendly and flirtatious, a combination that baffled Meg. She herself could never manage to pull off that particular look; Meg was either friendly or she was flirtatious. âIâm sure we can save you a slice if you want to stop by the diner later,â Peggy said.
âWeâre going to be open later than normal,â Katie added, âon account of closing up for Bill and Edieâs wedding.â
Dan smiled at the sisters. âItâs good to know thereâs a place to eat nearby.â
âPeople come from miles around for a piece of pie and our biscuits and gravy,â Peggy told him.
âBut they come back because of Apple Grove,â Katie added. âThereâs just something about Apple Grove. Even if youâve only been here a few years, you feel as if youâve always lived here. People care about each other hereâalways have, always will.â
Dan hung on every word and was quick to agree. âI can see why people would be tempted to stay.â He glanced at Meg and added, âIâve met some intriguing people so far.â
Warmth spread from her belly to her heart. It felt good to have Dan pay her a complimentâintriguing wasnât quite what she hoped for, but it was still good, wasnât it? Before she could decide, Sheriff Wallaceâs sister Beatrice walked over to say hello. âBeatrice runs the library. Itâs open three days a week,â Miss Trudi proudly proclaimed.
Meg nodded. âWe have a huge selection of classics and a first-class reference section.â
âThatâs right,â Beatrice agreed. âIf the book you want isnât on our shelves, weâre connected to three other libraries in Licking County and have an extensive online catalogue. We can have the book you need sent over from any of the libraries in our group.â
Danâs brow was furrowed when he asked, âDo you have cookbook and automotive sections?â
His question
