ship was handy.â
âWhat have you done now?â
âItâs a long story. I was running from the Watch and found myself near the docks. I snuck aboard your ship to escape, intending to leave before the ship sailed.â
He let his keen gaze roam over her, obviously coming to his own conclusion when he noted her filthy, torn gown. His voice held a note of disgust. âYou look like a cheap doxy.â
Her chin rose slightly. âHow dare you insult me! None of this is my fault. If you will kindly turn the ship about, I will be more than happy to leave.â
âItâs too late.â
âWhat?â
âYou heard me, Sophia, itâs too late to turn about. I fear youâre stuck aboard the
Intrepid
until she reaches Jamaica.â
âJamaica! No, I donât want to go there. Please, Christian, return me to London.â
âSorry, Sophia, this is my ship, and youâre stuck here. Once we reach Jamaica, Iâll send you home on another ship.â He stared at her breasts. âYouâve changed.â
Sophia crossed her arms over her chest. âSo have you.â
He eyed her narrowly. âWhere is your husband?â
âIâm not married.â
âEngaged?â
âNot even close.â
âA rich manâs mistress?â
âNo, damn you!â Sophia sputtered.
He shrugged. âItâs a natural assumption. You were going to sell yourself to Desmond.â
âThat was Father and Rayfordâs doing. You know I preferred you. I had no choice. I was too young and inexperienced to fight them for the man I wanted.â
âStop it! I donât want to hear about who you did or did not prefer. Itâs the result of your actions thatâs important.â
âIâm sorry about Desmond. I know you hold me responsible for his death.â
He turned away from her. âI blame myself.â He whirled back to face her. âDamnation! What devil tempted Fate to bring you back into my life?â
Her chin rose defiantly. âItâs not as if I planned this.â
âAre you living in London now?â
âNo, Iâve only been in Town a few weeks.â
âFrom whom were you running away?â
Sophia grimaced. âMen.â
Chris gave her a wry grin. âWhy donât I believe that?â
Sophia shrugged. âItâs the truth.â
Chris searched her face, pausing at her lips before abruptly looking away. âAre you hungry?â
âA little.â
âIâll have my cabin boy bring hot water and something for you to eat. You look like you could use a good wash. Donât leave this cabin,â he warned. âI can usually control my crew, but youâre a bit too fetching to pass their notice. Iâll return later.â
There came a knock on the door.
âThat will be my cabin boy,â Chris said. âCome in, Casper.â
A towheaded lad of eleven or twelve bounded into the cabin and skidded to a halt when he saw Sophia. His mouth dropped open as he stared from her to Chris.
âYou can close your mouth, Casper,â Chris said. âIt seems we have a stowaway. Miss Sophia Carlisle will be traveling to Jamaica with us. Sophia, this is Casperâhe will be seeing to your needs during our voyage.â
Casper darted a glance at Sophia, then lowered his gaze. âMiss,â he said shyly.
âBring a jug of hot water for Miss Carlisle,â Chris said. âIâm sure sheâd welcome a bath. Then see if you can rustle up some food from the galley. Oh, yes, and bring more charcoal for the brazier. We wonât hit warmer waters for another two weeks.â
âAye, Captain,â Casper said, darting another glance at Sophia before ducking out the door.
âYou should be set for a while,â Chris said coolly. âIâll return later; we can talk about your circumstances then, and whatâs to be done with you.â
