I fill them in on all the details, I can see her smiling at me. She understands that I only needed someone like Mike to show me what I have been missing.

“I never understood, before last night, how good it could be,” I finish almost dreamily. Just thinking about Mike, and the things he did to me is making me wet again.

“I’m glad for you, Daisy,” Bev says, putting her hand on my arm. Beverly is only two years older than me, but far more worldly. “It’s about time you found someone that can do right by you.”

“I’ve been done right all right,” I sigh, causing the other three to laugh.

“Did either of you two get anything out of your dates about what they do?” Teri asks. “Dan wouldn’t tell me a damn thing. I didn’t even know he was in the Army until I found out we had to go back to my place.”

    “Same here,” I say.

“Mine, as well,” Kat chimes in. “Glenn would only tell me they were TDY to Benning. What’s TDY mean Daisy?”

“Temporary duty. Or as my dad used to call it, temporary duty, yonder,” I explain. “Mike said they were from Fort Bragg in North Carolina. They came here for training for the next eight weeks.”

“Oooh,” Teri purrs. “Eight weeks. I may not be able to walk after that, but I hope they give them lots of time off.”

I snicker. “I doubt it. TDY for training probably means they are going to be pretty busy; but, I’m with you. I would really like to see Mike again.”

“Listen,” Beverly says to get our attention. “If one of them calls you, see if he has a buddy, okay? I’m feeling left out. I want in on some of this!”

The three of us laugh at Beverly’s predicament and agree to help her out if we can.

    ***

Monday evening, I’m on the way home from work when my cell rings. Every time my phone has rung since Saturday morning, I snatch it up. Each time I hope it’s Mike. Each time I’m disappointed, but this time I’m not.

“Hey, Daisy,” Mike says when I answer. He sounds really tired.

“Mike! I’m so glad you called. I’ve been wanting to talk to you.”

    “Really? What’s up?”

“Nothing. I was just hoping we could get together again soon.”

“I would like to, but we just got in. We go back out tomorrow at oh-four thirty. How about a quick dinner tonight?” he suggests.

I pull into a parking lot to turn around before I answer. “I would love to do that. Pick you up at the same barracks where I dropped you off?”

    “Yeah. That would be great.”

“Mike, is everything okay?” I ask, worried that something is wrong.

“Yeah. Just tired. They’re kicking our ass.”

We continue to talk, as I work my way back to the base. Because I am an employee on the base, I am waved through the gate with no problems. Mike is settling into my car in less than fifteen minutes.

He is sunburned and he looks exhausted. “Are you sure you are up for this?” I ask, as he greets me with a quick kiss. I had hoped we would be able to work in a quickie at my house, but I can tell Mike probably isn’t up for it tonight.

“Yeah. I gotta eat sometime. And the company is a hell of a lot better than the chow line.”

I smile. “What do they have you doing?”

“Training. I thought I told you.”

“You did. I mean, what kind of training?”

Mike is quiet for a moment. “I can’t say. I’m sorry.”

“You can’t or you won’t?” I ask. I don’t know why he is being so evasive, but it bothers me a little.

“In this case, maybe it is the same thing,” Mike says. “It’s just some training to help me do my job better. That’s all.”

“And what’s your job? You neatly dodged that question the last time I asked.”

    “Soldier.”

I pull the car into the parking lot of the TGI Fridays. It’s close and the casual atmosphere won’t make Mike look out of place in his uniform and boots.
