something I hadn’t noticed before. It was a picture of my father and my mother, and me. The picture must have been at least twenty years old.
“Jesus, Cooper, don’t make me care about him. It’s only going to make things harder.” The idea that my father cared for me, that he had exiled himself to Alaska for my protection; it didn’t make me sad; it made me angry. Who the hell did he think he was leaving us on our own? And what the hell was he doing that got him killed?
“Come on, let’s get out of here.”
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“Well, I need breakfast, and then we can go wherever you want.”
“Do you think the pack did this to him?”
Cooper ran his hands over mine. “If you want to know, I’ll help you find out.” I did want to know, but I didn’t want him to help me. I didn’t want to get him hurt or killed, and if the pack had been involved, Cooper would risk everything by helping me. For the first time, I realized that maybe my fling with Cooper wasn’t just a fling. Maybe I felt something more for him. Damnit . This wasn’t how I had seen this going.
“Let’s start with breakfast, and see where it goes from there.”
“I’ll go start the truck.”
After Cooper made his way out of the house, I looked around. Maybe this was my silver lining. Maybe I was meant to come here and meet Cooper. I got up and pulled some clothes on. The sun was beating hard on the front of the house. It was going to be a long day.

Here are sneak peeks of “ Forced by Wolves ” and “At the Doctor’s Desire:”
As I pulled the dress on, Thane stepped behind me and laced it up. I looked at myself in the mirror, I barely recognized myself. Far from the sexual object I had just felt like, and far from the protected daughter I had been, I felt like a woman. The dress pulled against my waist and accentuated my breasts. The dress was in the old style, elegant in a way I hadn’t seen in years. Where had he gotten it?
“That will do nicely for tomorrow,” Thane said.
“What’s tomorrow?” I asked.
“Tomorrow I will formally introduce you, after I have chosen your role.”
“What is my role?” I asked him.
He leaned in against me and watched my reflection in the mirror, the pale light against the outline of my body. He pulled me tighter against him, and I didn’t dare more or say anything. What was he thinking? As I looked at him in the mirror, I wondered if he was even looking at me at all or if he was lost in some memory.
“It is uncertain,” he finally said after a long pause.
Slowly, he moved his hands up the sides of my bodice, sending shivers through my body. I felt his thick fingers tracing the spaces between my ribs. My pulse quickened and breaths became short and shallow. Thane leaned over my shoulder and whispered into my ear, “Do I frighten you?”
Yes . I wanted to say. Yes, you do . But it wasn’t for the reason I would have guessed. I wasn’t afraid of him. I was drawn to him, overpowered by physical attraction to him. I wanted badly to give myself to him, and it terrified me.
“In a way,” I said. I looked at his reflection behind mine in the mirror. He had begun unlacing the back of my dress. My dress . I had never seen it before a moment ago, and now it was my only possession in the world, a gift from Thane.
He slipped the dress off my shoulder, letting his fingers trail over my skin. He repeated this on the other side and then pulled the dress down below my hips. I could feel his breath on my neck, so soft it felt almost delicate against my skin. Just feeling it gave me goose bumps. I shivered in anticipation, and I felt my nipples harden. From what I had known of Thane, I hadn’t expected any
