night, in his home.â
âMurdered?â
âYes; shot once in the head.â
âIs Arrington all right?â He steeled himself for the answer.
âYes; sheâs in a local hospital.â
âWas she hurt?â
âNo.â
âWho shot Vance?â
âThatâs undetermined,â Dino said. âBut when I got back to Rick, he told me he thinks Arrington might be a suspect.â
Stone found a sofa and sat down. âJesus Christ,â he said, then remembered in whose company he was. âForgive me, Your Eminence.â
The cardinal nodded soberly.
âI wouldnât put too much stock in that theory,â Dino said. âYou and I both know that, in cases like this, the spouse is always a suspect until cleared.â
Stone nodded. He was trying to think what to do next but not getting anywhere.
The cardinal came and sat down beside him. âStone,â he said, putting a fatherly hand on his shoulder, âI am aware of your previous relationship with Arrington. Eduardo and I have discussed this at some length, and we agree that it would be extremely unwise to go forward with the wedding until this . . . situation has been, in some way, resolved.â
Stone looked at the man but said nothing.
Eduardo came and stood next to Stone. âThis is very complicated,â he said. âBoth Dolce and I are friends of Vanceâs, and you, of course, were very close to Arrington. There will be many emotions at work for a while, so many and so confused that to proceed with the marriage at this time would be folly.â
âDoes Dolce know about this?â
Eduardo shook his head. âI am going to go and wake her now and tell her; this is my duty, not yours.â
âI will come, too,â the cardinal said. âShe may need me.â
Stone nodded. âAll right. Tell her weâll talk the minute sheâs ready.â
Eduardo and the cardinal left the room.
âWhat havenât you told me?â Stone asked Dino.
âRick says Arrington hasnât made any kind of statement yet. She apparently canât remember what happened. Theyâve put her under sedation in a private clinic, but . . .â
âBut what?â
âBefore she went under, she was asking for you; she said she wouldnât talk to anybody but you.â
âIâll have to call her,â Stone said.
âI told you, sheâs under sedation, and Rick didnât know the name of the place where theyâd taken her.â
âHow about Peter? Where is he?â
âThe servants are taking care of him; he has a nanny. Rick said his people had spoken to Arringtonâs mother, and sheâs on her way out there from Virginia.â
âThatâs good.â
âDid Rick say anything else at all?â
âNo. He was going to make some calls, and he said heâd get back to me the minute he found out anything more.â
Stone walked to the windows and looked out into the lovely garden. âDino,â he said, âdid Arrington know that Dolce and I were being married this weekend?â
âI have no idea. Did you tell her?â
Stone shook his head. âI havenât talked with her since last summer; Dolce and I had dinner with them in Connecticut, at their place in Roxbury. Itâs only a few miles from my new place in Washington.â
âAnd how did that go?â
âNot well. Dolce was very catty, obviously jealous. The next morning, Arrington showed up at my cottage and, well, sort of threw herself at me.â
âAnd how did you handle that?â Dino asked.
âI managed to keep her pretty much at armâs lengthâthough, God knows, that wasnât what I wanted. I told her I wouldnât do anything to harm her marriage, and that was pretty much that. A couple of minutes after she left, Vance showed upâI think he must have been following her. He asked if he had anything to
