she noticed the time on her dashboard clock.
“Dammit,” she said aloud, “I’m late!”
It would be okay if this was her client, but he wasn’t. Mr. Taylor belonged to her best friend Jessica.
Jessica had been moonlighting as a housekeeper for him for the last two years to help pay her bills. She’d bragged about how much she earned working for him, so when Clare was asked sub-in for her friend this evening, she reluctantly agreed. She had never been anyone’s maid before and she wasn’t sure she would be any good at it. But Jessica had begged and she couldn’t disappoint her best friend.
Of course, she wasn’t supposed to arrive late. Hurriedly, Clare turned off her headlights and exited the car. A gust of cold, winter wind met her by surprise, tearing open her dark trench coat and revealing her rather inappropriate outfit.
Beneath her coat was a soft, curvy figure, barely covered by a short, sexy black dress. She had hoped that what she wasn’t able to do in cleaning she could make up for with some innocent flirting.
Clare shivered from the cold and nerves. All she knew was that she had to keep Mr. Taylor happy so that Jessica kept her job. Unfortunately, she didn’t know much about Mr. Taylor or about cleaning mansions. All she knew was that he was a single man who worked late hours and early mornings. He hired Jessica to clean up after him and also for a bit of “company”, which was why she had to arrive so late.
Walking through the back door, Clare found herself in the maid’s quarters, where she hung her coat on a nearby hook. She found an apron left out, so she tied it across her waist and giggled. The short black skirt and the starch white apron were in strong contrast and made her feel a bit like she was wearing a “French maid” costume.
On the floor, she found the cleaning supplies neatly set out for her, just as Jessica had said they would be. She quickly grabbed what she hoped was a strong general cleaner, a dust cloth and added a feather duster for good measure. She then headed into the main part of the house to begin her shift.
As soon as she opened the doors, she was stunned. The home was gigantic. She stood in a small foyer, not quite sure where to begin. Finally, she took a deep breath, chose a direction and started walking. Her heels claimed the ground with every step as she swiftly crossed the marble floor, and a broad pair of French doors swung shut behind her as she entered what she thought must have been the formal dining room.
She waited for a moment, wondering if she was supposed to announce herself or just get started. Jessica hadn’t mentioned anything about that. But, she had made it seem like her boss would be there while she cleaned. Clare looked around and didn’t see or hear anyone in the house. Taking a deep breath, she sighed a bit with relief and got started with her chores.
A moment later, the front door opened and Mr. Taylor walked in. Clare stopped what she was doing and couldn’t help notice him. He was younger than she had expected—and more handsome. He had the most amazing eyes, and a chiseled strong jaw.
Why hadn’t Jessica mentioned this? She found herself staring and then blinked when she realized how she must look. “Good evening, sir,” she greeted him.
He looked over at her, as if noticing her for the first time. He arched a brow quickly and then the expression was gone. He replaced it with a warm smile and then said, “Good evening. Clare, isn’t it?”
“Yes,” she answered, and wondered what that fleeting expression had been. He continued to look her over and she felt a warm flush rise to her cheeks. Not sure what to say, she stammered. “Sorry I was late… sir.”
“I hadn’t even noticed,” he assured her, his sparkling eyes mesmerizing her as he made his way across the floor.
“I started with the dining room,” she told him, “then figured I would work my way through the other rooms on the first floor. But the house is
