I’m fine, really.”
“Thank you for everything, Lily,” he whispered before kissing my bruise. “You better be careful. You keep being this great to me and I might not ever leave.”
I smiled at him as he sat back on the floor. That didn’t sound like such a threat. Jasper was a nice guy who already was helpful and appreciated everything I did for him. That was really rare in a person.
He hurried to put all his stuff away before sitting back on the couch with me. “I might steal your jammie pants though. These are so comfortable.”
“They’re huge on you,” I snickered.
“Not huge, but I like them bigger. They’re really soft.”
“Yeah, I have several pairs,” I agreed. Hey, he could steal them, and considering how good he looked in them, it wouldn’t be any hardship on me to lose one if he wore them around the house. “Okay, so I went with Chinese appetizers, veggie tray, meat and cheese, and seafood dip platter.”
“It all looks amazing. I promise not to eat the last of anything though.”
“Oh, we’ll get along really well,” I chuckled, shaking my head. He glanced at me a moment so I decided to explain. “That’s always my pet peeve. I live by myself. I should never go for something and have none left without me knowing it.”
He shrugged. “Totally fair in my book. What do you want to watch?”
“I’ve seen it all so your call.”
“She even lets me pick the movie—amazing,” he muttered as he flipped through the options.
We ended up starting with I, Frankenstein . Then he wanted to see Frozen , which I couldn’t help but tease him about since most adult men don’t pick Disney movies on their own. He listened to me when I suggested the new Hercules wasn’t a first draft pick so we went with World War Z .
It was a fun night and I didn’t even have to clean up the trays. Jasper paused the movie and loaded them in the fridge, asking if I needed anything while he was up. I said I was fine and I ended up having such a good time I never went and got my laptop. It was nice having a movie buddy who talked just the right amount and enjoyed good stories as I did.
Sometime during The Mortal Instruments , which I’d seen like a dozen times, I fell asleep… On him. I woke up with my head on his lap, his fingers running through my hair that wasn’t in my tie anymore. It was strangely intimate given our situation, and worse, I really liked it. That wasn’t something I should get used to.
“I’m gonna head to bed,” I yawned as I sat up.
“Do you want me to turn this off?”
“No, I’m good. It’s not loud.” I gave him a wave as I stood and walked out of the family room. “Sleep tight, Jasper.”
“You too, Lily.”
I was in my bed minutes later, out for the count. What a crazy, screwy day that one had been.

“Time to get up, sleepy head. Daylight’s burning,” a deep voice chuckled from next to me. My eyes snapped open and I saw Jasper lying next to me in my king-sized bed.
Which meant something else.
“Get off!” I screeched as I sat up and tugged the covers. His eyes went wide as he immediately rolled off the bed. I threw back the bedding and sucked in a harsh breath. “I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s fine. What’s going on, Lily?” he whispered as he walked around the bed and sat down next to me. “What were you looking for?”
“Who,” I corrected, tears in my eyes. “My pup. It’s like it doesn’t hit me that he’s gone when I first wake up, and when I saw you there, it was like that realization was hitting me as I thought you could be crushing him. I’m so sorry, Jasper.”
“How long ago?” He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me against him.
“Beginning of the year. I know, I should be over it by now, but it was just him and me for almost ten years. We should have had more time. He was my baby, my traveling buddy, always excited for our new adventure or place to live, and my best friend.”
