âIâm sorry, but Iâm a bit taken aback about all this. I had no idea that Amelia had even married.â She looked away as tears filled her eyes.
She felt overwhelmed by the events that had recently changed her life. She wanted nothing more than to be alone to deal with this new, unwelcome news. âIs there somewhere we can bathe and rest?â she asked Jack Keller.
âThereâs the hotel next door. Rebb Colfaxâs daughter from back East just opened her,â Jack said.
Rachel blinked. Of course, the inn! How could she have forgotten? Because sheâd been shaken by the news of Ameliaâs marriage, she thought. âThank you. Iâm going to get a room,â she told Miranda.
âIâll go with you,â Miranda said.
Rachel nodded at Jack. âMr. Keller.â She managed another smile for Jane. âJane.â
The compassion in the young womanâs blue eyes surprised her. âThere is no reason for you to stay at the hotel,â Jane said quietly. âYouâre family. You can stay at Danielâs. Heâs not home, butââ
âNo!â Rachel said, dismayed by the idea. Her tone was sharper than sheâd intended; she softened it. âReally, the hotel is fine. I appreciate the offer, but Iâd rather wait to see Amelia later after Iâve rested.â She smiled tiredly. âTheyâre not expecting me. Thereâs been enough sudden surprises for today.â
Jane murmured that she understood.
Rachel turned to Mirandaâs uncle. Sheâd grown quite fond of him during these past few weeks. âThank you for bringing me, Uncle Rupert.â
Rupert regarded her fondly. âIâll see you at the hotel later.â
Rachel inclined her head, then left without saying good-bye. Miranda followed her.
Jack Keller narrowed his gaze as Ameliaâs sister left the trading post. âSheâs not like her sister, is she,â he said with a frown.
Jane looked at him with surprise. âYou donât like her?â
âShe certainly wasnât friendly.â
âSheâs tired,â Rupert explained.
âSheâs hurting,â Jane said. âWhy do you think a woman like that would come all the way out here to live?â she added when Jack frowned.
He shrugged. âTo be with her family?â
Rupert nodded. âShe does want to be with her family.â He went to a side window and watched as Rachel and Miranda entered the building several yards away. âSheâs a good girl. Donât judge her too harshly.â
âAmeliaâs mentioned her sister a few times,â Jane said. âI wonder if sheâll be glad to see her.â
âI suppose youâll find out soon enough. If Iâm not mistaken, that man and woman going into the house across the road is your brother and his wife.â
Jane hurried toward the window. âItâs them! Theyâre back!â She spun from the opening, her face reflecting her joy.
Jack felt something soften inside him as Jane gasped out her good-byes and ran to the door.
He went to the window and watched as Janeâs daughter, Susie, looked over and saw her mother.
âMomma!â she cried, running to Jane with open arms.
âSusie!â Jane hugged her daughter tightly. As mother and child pulled away from each other, they both babbled in their excitement at being reunited.
Rupert stood silently beside Jack, watching the scene. âThereâs a woman and a little girl who love each other something fierce.â He turned to Jack as the trading post owner moved away from the window. âHow come she didnât go with them?â
Something kicked in Jackâs gut. âDaniel and Amelia went to the village of an Ojibwa friend.â The realization that it had been a long time since Rupertâs last visit made him explain. âJaneâs still suffering from her captivity with the
