night,â I admitted.
âSee!â Lea exclaimed. âThereâs something up there!â
I put my briefcase down and went up to the attic. Lea followed me as I grabbed a
flashlight and started looking around.
âI donât see anything,â I said. I did see one of my old boxes sitting in the corner.
I walked over and opened it. Inside was a bunch of my old baseball trophies from
school.
âWhatâs that?â Lea asked.
âA bunch of trophies of mine from middle and high school.â
Lea came over to look in the box, and started reading the trophy plaques. âFirst
runner up. Division AAA. You never talked about playing baseball.â
âYeah, I used to love playing,â I told her. âJust one of those things I grew out
of, I guess.â
âCome on, Adrian. You have a lot of trophies here,â Lea said, looking at me and reading
the trophies. âHow do you just get tired of playing? First place. Division AAA. Thatâs
pretty great!â
I took a long look at the one that was in her hand. I remembered that trophy and
the pain that came with it.
âI got injured, and my grandma didnât think it was a good idea for me to keep playing,â
I explained. âI tore my ACL, in my knee, that year.â
âOuch. How did that happen?â
âWell, there were a lot of strange things happening that day,â I started. âI remember
we were getting ready to play East Coweta, which was one of our biggest rivals. I
was standing in front of the mirror of my closet, buttoning up my baseball jersey
before our game. My phone rang, and it was a girl named Christy. Now, I had been
avoiding this girl all week, and I planned on changing my number, because this girl
had turned into a true stalker. So I ignored her phone call like I had done that
whole week. Later that evening, at the baseball game, I remember the crowd was going
crazy because our school was down by one point. Let me see, I believe there were runners on first and third base, and it was the ninth inning. And I remember sitting
in the dugout next to Justin, but I was zoned out because Christy had showed up to
that game and was sitting in the bleachers staring at me the whole time.â
âOh, wow,â Lea said, hanging on my every word. I recalled for Lea the conversation
that had taken place between me and Justin:
âYou good, man?â Justin had asked.
âYeah, Iâm good,â I remember replying.
âI see that weird girl is here for you again,â Justin said, looking toward the bleachers
where Christy was.
âYeah, and she keeps blowing my phone up,â I told him.
âSounds like you got a stalker,â Justin smirked.
âI should have never listened to yâall,â I said, shaking my head.
âI didnât really think you were gonna get it on with her,â Justin said.
âYeah, well, I had to live up to my end of the deal,â I told him.
âWait, so yâall made a bet on that girl?â Lea interrupted.
âYeah, we did,â I answered, smiling.
âYâall were real jerks,â Lea responded. âIâm glad I didnât know you in high school.â
âYeah, but you know, we were young and just having fun back then,â I told Lea. âI
mean, being on the baseball team was like being in a fraternity.â
âSo yâall made bets on who could sleep with girls?â Lea asked.
âSomething like that. You see, being a junior on the varsity team, you pretty much
want to do everything that the seniors say. You know? So you can hang around them.
Soooo . . .â
I paused for a second and thought about whether I really wanted to keep telling Lea
about this.
âSooooo . . . ?â Lea asked.
âWell,â I hesitated. âThe bet was that I had to take a girlâs virginity.â
âReally, Adrian?â Lea said, shocked, but smiling at the same time. âDid you
