into town and youâll see it on your right. The green-and-white sign kind of jumps out at you.â
âThank you. I think Iâll try it.â
He walked back to the front door. âSuit yourself, but I think youâll be disappointed.â
âAs long as I donât have to pick the food myself, Iâll enjoy it.â
Rollin went inside and Tayler opened her computer back up. She hadnât been able to catch Nicole by phone, so she sent her another email. She was going to wring that chickâs neck.
A few minutes later, Rita poked her head out the door and announced that lemonade would be served in the library.
âRita, you didnât have to go to any trouble for me.â
âHoney, itâs no trouble at all. Besides, around here folks is dropping by all the time. Come on in and help yourself.â
Tayler went inside for her afternoon treat. First, she ran upstairs and grabbed her book. The minute she opened the door to head back outside with her goods, two children came barreling through the door, screaming as they shot past her.
She spun around and almost dropped her glass.
âI smell cookies, I smell cookies,â they screamed.
Kids. Please donât tell me theyâve come to stay. She could hear her peace coming to an end.
Juggling her lemonade, cookies and book, she continued out onto the porch to retain her seat.
âYou must be Tayler,â a woman who didnât look a day over twenty asked as she came up the steps.
âHow did I give myself away?â
âRollin said you were the only guest.â
âOh, that made it easy.â
âHi, Iâm Corra, his sister.â She held out her hand.
Tayler juggled a hand free. âHold on, let me set some of this down.â She placed everything on the table next to her laptop and shook the womanâs hand. âItâs nice to meet you, Corra. Do the little ones belong to you?â
âYes, those are mine. They smelled Ritaâs chocolate chip cookies the minute they stepped out of the car. I swear, itâs like theyâre cookie bloodhounds.â
Tayler chuckled. âThey are good.â
Corra placed a hand on her large hips. âI need cookies like I need a hole in my head, so Iâll take your word for it.â
Tayler returned to her seat.
âAre you enjoying your stay so far?â
âYes, I am. This is a lovely place.â
Corra walked over and sat in the swing across from Taylerâs rocking chair. âI hope Rollin is being hospitable.â
âHe is, and so is Rita. Everyoneâs been very nice.â
âWell, thatâs good. Rollin said youâre staying for a month, is that right?â
Tayler sipped her lemonade and nodded. âYes, maybe longer. Iâm not sure yet.â
âWow, where do you work that you can take that much time off? Iâve been at Save-A-Lot for over three years and all I get is a lousy two weeks.â
âI work for MesaCom, a small telecommunications company. I needed to get out of the city, so I took some extra vacation time.â
âOh, I see. Is that your laptop?â she asked, noticing it on the table next to Tayler.
âYeah.â
âAre you pretty good with computers?â
âI think so.â
âGreat. Weâre having a fund-raiser for Roosevelt Elementary trying to put a computer in every classroom. Youâd think the board would supply something so vital nowadays, but no, theyâre too busy making sure their members get raises.â
âThatâs definitely a worthy cause. Every child today should have a computer. If not, theyâll get left behind.â
âGirl, thatâs what Iâve been saying. But you know trying to convince some of them board members of that is like trying to talk a turtle into running a marathon. The PTAâs taken it upon ourselves to raise the money. Maybe you can help since youâre going to be here for a
