spotted a bottle of sparkling cider.
Noelle took out three crystal glasses. She filled one with extra ice, for which Kenley could not do without. She filled the glasses with cider. Each sister held up her glass.
âWeâre Houstons. Weâll get through this,â Milandra toasted.
âItâs going to be so hard,â Noelle admitted.
âWhy did this have to happen? I wish I hadnât given Mother such a hard time about where I wanted my party. I hate becoming sixteen. How can I have a birthday party without Mother and Father?â Kenley wept.
âJust stop it, Kenley,â Milandra scolded her. âYour sixteenth birthday celebration will go on. Itâs tradition.â
âCheers,â Noelle said as she tapped her glass against her sistersâ.
They took a sip from the glasses.
Kenley sat down at the table. She put her glass down and bowed her head. âMilandra, Iâm not as strong as you and Noelle.â Tears flowed down her cheeks.
Noelle placed her glass on the table. She put her arm around her sister. âGo ahead, Kenley, cry all you want. We all should cry ourselves to sleep tonight.â
âHow can you both forget that fast what Mother and Father have taught us?â Milandra asked.
Kenley jumped up. âIt hurts, Milandra. It truly hurts.â
Noelle wiped the tears from her baby sisterâs face. Milandra came over and they both comforted her for a few seconds. She spoke, âI canât sit here and do nothing.â
Milandra exited the kitchen to help finish handling their family saga.
After a while, Baron entered into the kitchen. Kenley and Noelle were busy watching the television screen for any breaking news of their sorrow.
âIâm so sorry about all this tragedy that has come down on your family,â he said.
âYouâre family, too,â Noelle said as she found the strength to give him a smile. She got up, went over to him, and gave him a hug. She pressed close to him.
âI appreciate the love,â he said as he moved on and gave her sister a hug.
Kenley wondered, âWhereâs Milandra?â
âSheâs seeing everyone out. Sheâs giving the housekeepers the night off.â
âThe bodiesâ¦sorry, I didnât mean to say bodies. Your parents have been taken away. I told Milandra Iâd handle all of the funeral arrangements,â he said.
âWe do thank you, Mr. Chavis,â Noelle said; she wanted to call him by his first name.
Milandra made her way back into the kitchen. âThe coast is clear. Maybe we should go and take a swim.â
âThatâd be a good way for you all to relax. Or better yet, go out and sit by the lake.â
âI donât want to see any water. I want my parents,â Kenley cried.
âDonât be difficult. That is what mother would say to you. Now go put on your bathing suit,â Milandra demanded.
Kenley got up and ran from the kitchen.
âMr. Chavis, Iâll speak to you later. Iâm going up to get ready for a swim and to make sure Kenley is doing the same.â
âSince you relieved the help, Iâll tidy up the kitchen. Iâll be up in a minute,â Noelle said.
Milandra exited the kitchen. Noelle waited until she didnât hear any sound of heels tapping against the floor. She rushed into his arms. She kissed Baron passionately.
âBaby, Iâve been wanting you to comfort me. Letâs tell Milandra and Kenley about us. We no longer have any reason to keep our relationship a secret,â Noelle whispered in his ear.
He delicately pulled her away. âWe need to wait. I donât think Milandra will take it lightly hearing about any contact we may have had. Right now is not the best time. Sheâll think you defied your parents. This will bring friction between you and your sisters. You need each other more now than ever.â
Noelle knew that what he said was true. Kenley would
