grab from their fortress in Connecticut. He took it down from the shelf with the other newly acquired books and tossed it to Salt. “If you want to know things, then read. There is a lot of good information in that book about vampire kind. Just don’t take it out of our chamber please. There is also information that could be detrimental in the wrong hands.”
Salt nodded and looked at the book. He would have to read it and see what information he could learn from it. “So this is an instruction manual for vampires?”
“Kind of. It gives a lot of information that you will probably never need to know. I found it interesting so I read it cover to cover.”
“Why did you make the comment about it being detrimental? Have you heard something about trouble?”
Rory shrugged. “I don’t know, Russell. I overheard a conversation in the lab the other day. Two of the scientists were talking about a group of mixed individuals who were unhappy with the role the vampires are playing. When I asked them about it, they claimed not to know that much. They only said that they have heard of this group. It was extremely nonspecific.”
“Do you think the two men are part of the threat?”
“I suppose it’s possible, but they are vampires, so probably not.”
Salt hadn’t heard anything about that. He frowned and then noticed the somewhat guilty expression on Russell’s face. “What do you know about it, Russell?”
“I don’t know if I know anything. Becka made a comment about vampires being weaker than shifters. I wrote it off to the fact that she was trying to get me to stay with her. Now I have to wonder if there was more to it.”
“How did she figure that we are weaker?”
“It is due to the fact that vampires live at night and can’t tolerate the light of the sun. Of course most vampires here have a room such as this that is light resistant. Actually most of them don’t have windows as we do, so their rooms are not subject to sunlight at all. I suppose those in the meeting hall or in the gardens during the daylight could be killed, but most vampires retire before the sun anyway. It is mainly the older ones that will stay up to see the sun.”
Rory thrust his fingers into his hair, brushing it back from his face. It was a familiar habit to represent irritation or that he was considering something deeply. “Em has had an obsession with the sun lately. She even mentioned to me that she thought her body was reverting back to sleeping at night and staying awake during the daylight. That obviously isn’t the case now though.”
“I hate to ask this, but what would happen if bombs were set off in the caves? If the roof was filled with fissures and holes we would all be in big trouble. Most vampires live in the upper portions of the caves.”
Rory and Russell both glared at him. “Where would they get explosives?”
“Not all of the scientists are vampires. If the humans have teamed up with the shifters and are against us, the shit could easily hit the fan.”
“I suppose you’re right. I will have to start watching and listening a little closer when I’m below. The problem is, if they set the bombs off during the daytime, what are we supposed to do about it?”
“I don’t know.”
Russell frowned. “I do. I have a feeling that we need to ask Em. I don’t know why, but I think she will have a plan. She usually does.”
Rory looked down at Em. “Well, maybe we should have had this conversation before we knocked her into unconsciousness. I just wanted her to get some more sleep.”
Salt yawned. “Actually, that sounds like a great idea. I’m still tired.”
Rory nodded. “Yeah, me, too. I didn’t sleep very good.”
Russell lay back down on Em’s body and without a word turned back into a small wolf. Salt had to think that Russell was also tired and in complete agreement about sleeping some more. He lay back down and closed his eyes, welcoming the blissful sleep of the sun.
