it over to her, narrowly missing an old man slowly headed in the same direction. Sorry, old dude, but I have a date with destiny.
Her back was to him, but she turned slightly when he stepped close. The lush scent of honeysuckle wafting from her hair made him think of late summer and lazy, hot days. Her straight, chin-length, blunt-cut hairstyle framed a heart-shaped face. If memory served, her eyes were a curious mix of blue and green. He drew ever closer to her in the line, unable to keep a civil distance. After less than a minute of inching closer, he was practically touching her. And in fact, that was his next goal. Perhaps it would be a great conversation starter. Just bump into her, grab her close, and start talking before she could get away like last time.
The sultry scent of her put his libido into dangerous territory. He wanted a chance to at least get her name. Since she wasn’t holed up in Clay’s security fortress this time, she was most assuredly fair game.
He swayed closer and slid his feet a half a step into her personal space. She wasn’t very tall. The top of her head would tuck nicely beneath his chin. He couldn’t wait to take her into his arms. Suddenly, as if the heat from his body finally registered at her back, she turned and bumped her shoulder into his chest before making it all the way facing him. Fate started the pending conversation for him.
“Sorry, I—” she started to say, but then her eyes widened as her stunned gaze focused in on him. “You!”
“Hi, I’m Zeke Traynor. Great to actually speak to you this time.” He brought his hand up between them and held it out. “And I’m even happier to see you.”
She didn’t say anything. She didn’t move. She simply stared into his eyes, and Zeke didn’t mind that at all.
He kept his smile in place and stared right back. She was so lovely. So petite. So perfect. Since she hadn’t moved to shake his hand, he dropped it to his side and in doing so brushed the sleeve of her shirt. This action brought her out of her trance. She snatched her arm away and took a huge step back. He fought the urge to follow her move.
Planting his feet in place, he took another tack. “What’s your name again?”
“How did you find me?” she asked. She looked all around her as if to assure herself that she was in a public place and couldn’t be kidnapped without witnesses.
He shrugged. “I didn’t find you on purpose. It’s just a lucky coincidence. This is my bank. I was here to get some money for a standing poker game tomorrow night. The ATM outside was broken, so I had to come inside. And here you are. If you bank here, too, then I guess fate is smiling down on us.”
She swallowed hard. “That seems unlikely.”
“Why?” He leaned closer, as if to whisper conspiratorially. “Don’t you believe in destiny?”
“No. I’m much more practical,” came her soft, breathy reply. Most importantly, she didn’t move away from his advance.
“Good to know.” He watched carefully as her face relaxed. She glanced up and stared deeply into his eyes as if trying to get a peek at his soul. If he wasn’t mistaken, her cheeks deepened in color, suddenly turning very pink. She was even more attractive blushing. Her gaze hadn’t moved from his face. Was she staring at his lips or his eyes? Doesn’t matter.
He was transfixed by her intent fascination. “Are you going to answer my other question?” he asked quietly, not wanting to break the mood or stop her from looking her fill.
“What question?” she replied in a whisper. Their eyes locked. She swayed a little closer, but her gaze didn’t waver.
“The one about your name and what it is.”
She opened her mouth as if to answer, but no sound came forth. Her wide-eyed gaze trapped him. He leaned down as she swayed closer. Their lips were mere inches apart. Was she about to kiss him? Would she let him kiss her right here in the center of the bank?
Zeke wanted to freeze this moment in time
