might do if she confronted him again. There was only one thing I could do. I raced out to my car and headed for their apartment.
I’d swear I caught every fucking red light on the twelve-mile route. Little old ladies kept pulling in front of me and all the forces of the universe were working against my timely arrival. Ten years later I finally arrived at the complex but it took another five to find a parking space.
    “Son of a bitch.”
Once I finally settled my compact gas-guzzler into a spot, I jumped out and jogged across the complex to Declan’s door. He’d been living in the apartment when Elle met him and she’d been ridiculously impressed. We were nineteen and he was twenty-one. He’d had a car, a job and his own place. What more could a girl ask for? I’d learned to hate him early on but Elle was head over heels. There hadn’t been a damn thing I could do.
I walked up the metal stairs to his apartment quickly, immediately noticing the open door. It was quiet though, no yelling or screaming. I approached cautiously and looked back at the parking lot for Declan’s truck. It was missing. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all. I stepped into the apartment and fought the urge to start hollering for Elle. I wasn’t sure calling attention to myself would be a good idea. The living room was a wreck, but whether from a fight or Declan’s usual sloppy self I had no clue. I moved down the hallway to the only bedroom, vaguely noting the kitchen was empty.
There was a thump in the bedroom but the door was closed. I pressed my ear against it and heard at least two muffled voices. I couldn’t tell if one of them was Elle but concern quickly overrode my initial fear and I opened the door. Shock held me immobile for a moment before I yelped and pulled the door shut again.
    “Shit! Megan?”
“Uh…yeah, it’s me. I’ll, uh…just wait in the living room.”
I all but ran back into the living room, trying to decide between laughing hysterically and dying of embarrassment. The bedroom door opened and Elle came rushing down the hallway, hastily buttoning her blouse on the way.
“Meg, oh my god, I don’t know what happened—”
“The hell you don’t, Elle,” an aggravated masculine voice said.
I turned to find a shirtless, hot-as-hell guy I didn’t know following on Elle’s heels. His jeans were unbuttoned halfway and his black hair was mussed. Elle had been straddling him on the bed when I’d walked in.
I raised my hands and fought the urge to smile. “Uh, look it’s really none of my business.”
“Meg, really, I didn’t mean for this to happen.”
“Damn it, Elle, stop ignoring me.”
He looked so adorably hurt I couldn’t help but sympathize. His gaze was all for Elle until I physically stepped between them.
“Hi, I’m Megan, Elle’s best friend in the world. You are?”
He stopped trying to get Elle’s attention and huffed out a breath, running one hand through his hair as he held the other out to me.
    “I’m Hank.”
My eyebrows nearly shot off my face. I smiled as I shook his hand. “ You’re Hunky Hank?”
    “Megan!” Elle shouted.
Hank’s impatient frown immediately morphed into a satisfied grin. “Is that what she calls me?” he asked.
“Oh yeah. But I have to say, her descriptions have not done you justice.”
I made a show of ogling him up and down before giving Elle a thumbs-up. He frowned again and she laughed.
“Oh stop it, you’re scaring him. Hank, Meg is just playing. She’s madly in love with someone else but trying to get a reaction out of me.”
I opened my mouth to dispute her “madly in love” claim, but Hank beat me to it.
    “Is it working?” he asked.
The look Elle gave him was one I’d never seen on her face before. Even through the bruising—the swelling had thankfully gone down a bit—I could tell she was smitten. Hell, from what I’d walked in on I’d say smitten was way too tame a word. And it appeared to go both ways.
