Delana would understand, and with that, he turned and headed for the treeline.
“I thought for sure he was going to change his mind and not help us,” Delana finally whispered when Wesken was out of sight.
“The brothers are intimidating, but they are fair. Come, it’s getting late. Tomorrow will be a grueling day,” he told her as he led her back to the tent.

Delana lay there, with the sounds of Khet’s deep breaths teasing her ears. Heat radiated from his body, warming the entire tent, making his scent all the more potent. Every breath she took had her body pulsing with need. Her nipples puckered beneath her shirt and more than ever she wished she could be in her wolf form. If only to hide her body’s reactions, but then her desire to snuggle closer would be worse. Khet had to smell her arousal, yet he stayed as far away from her as he could. She wouldn’t embarrass either of them by making unwelcome advances.
She couldn’t even blame him for not wanting to shift to sleep with her. Wolves often liked to snuggle in their lupine forms, but usually only with family or people they considered pack. And they had just met. If her heart ached a little that he was her mate and didn’t feel the same need for closeness, she would get over it. There would be time to win him over once they got to the village. With that thought, she shifted her weight a little and closed her eyes. She didn’t know how much from their camp they would want to carry with them, but she would do her best to help.
She shifted to a more comfortable position on the hard ground and closed her eyes. Morning would come soon enough, and she needed the rest. Tension melted from her body at the soothing sound of Khet’s deep breaths. If anyone could help her pack, these men could, she thought as she dozed off.
Delana’s heart raced, and she struggled to get enough air into her lungs to ease their burning as she raced from her house into the cool night air. It couldn’t be happening. Not again. Vicious growls and the sounds of wolves fighting filled the sleepy village. She rushed to the packhouse and nearly stumbled at the sight of the bodies strewn all over. Some were the enemy. Too many were Komoro. To her right, Joss battled a huge gray wolf. Both had blood dripping from various injuries. She rushed forward, though what she would do against such a strong enemy, she had no idea.
“Go to Rasha. Lock yourself in. Protect her,” her alpha had demanded as he bounded past her. She whimpered, as she saw the gray wolf launch itself at her brother. “Go. Now,” he commanded, his voice a deep, deadly growl.
“Delana.”
Arms of steel clamped around her, and she fought against them, biting and clawing with everything she had. She had to get to Rasha. She was with cub, and she needed protection. She wouldn’t let her alpha down.
“Delana. Stop.”
Her arms were wrenched up high above her head, the wolf’s body pinned her to the ground. Delana opened her mouth wide, ready to take a bite out of the bastard that was attacking her when another loud growl rumbled all around her.
Delana opened her eyes and for a moment, she didn’t know where she was, only that she couldn’t move. She bucked up against Khet, trying to free herself.
“Enough, Delana. You’re safe,” Khet said.
Chapter 7
Delana buried her face in Khet’s neck. Her breaths came in short, haggard pants, and her whole body shook, making her teeth chatter. A small sob tore from her throat, and he wanted to destroy whatever and whoever had caused her such distress even if it were only in her dreams. The need to defend—to destroy—pulsed through him like a living, breathing thing. It should have given the beast inside him more power, fueled its fury, but although it was alert, the creature made no move to push to the surface. Khet waited for it to fight his restraint. His breath caught in his throat. A moment passed, then another, yet nothing.
Khet released Delana’s
