Marlon. This going back and forth with Ms. Lucille is a waste of time.â
âMama, you act like I wanna go back and forth with them. Can you believe they gave the girls a DNA test behind my back? You donât think I shoulda went over there and said anything?â Paige couldnât believe how her mother was acting. It was as if she thought Paige was in the wrong.
âNo, I donât. Is Myla Marlonâs daughter?â
âI know youâre not asking me that.â
âWell then, let them give her ten DNA tests; I donât care how many tests they give. The fact that Marlon is her father will not change.â
âShe does have a point, Paige.â Nina shrugged, looking at Paige.
âThanks for the support, Nina. You said yourself you woulda beat them down.â
âI hope you didnât go over there putting your hands on nobody.â Paigeâs mother shot her a look.
âI defended myself, Mama, thatâs all. But I did tell them they have thirty days to get outta my house.â
âNow, I donât blame you for that . . . especially since your name is on the deed. You should kick them out.â
âNo, she shouldnât. Didnât you tell me that his new wife is pregnant? And you arenât paying the mortgage, so itâs not hurting you.â
Paige stared at her mother. She hated the fact that she was acting as if Paige was being the unreasonable one, when it was Kasey and Ms. Lucille that were disrespecting her.
âMama, I canât talk to you about this. I canât believe youâre making me out to be the bad person here.â Paige stood up to leave.
âIâm not making you out to be anything, Paige. Iâm your mother and Iâm trying to tell you whatâs right. Iâm warning youâthis thing is gonna turn ugly if you donât back off and leave it alone. For Mylaâs sake, if for no other reason.â
âWell, guess what Maâit already got ugly.â Paige walked through the kitchen and opened the back door. âMyla, come on, letâs go.â
âAwww, Ma,â Myla whined from the swingset, âjust five more minutes.â
Paige could feel a headache about to come on. âNo, Myla, now! Iâm not calling you again!â
âLet her play a little while longer. Iâll bring her home.â Nina walked up to Paige. âYou need some alone time anyway.â
âCan you believe her? Youâd think she was on their side.â Paige sighed.
âYou know how your mom is, she just hates confrontation.â
âWhatever.â Paige shrugged. âAt least I know where her loyalty lies in this whole situation.â
âPaige, come on now, her loyalty lies with you. It always has, and it always will. She just sees the situation differently, thatâs all. Sheâs looking at it as Mylaâs grandmother.â Nina pointed over at the two girls playing. âShe doesnât want anything to disrupt that little girlâs childhood.â
âAnd I do?âThatâs why Iâm trying to protect her from Ms. Lucille and KaseyâIâve got a headache. Iâll see you when you get to the house.â
âYouâre leaving?â Her mother walked back into the den. âI was about to cook.â
âYeah, my head is hurting. Nina says sheâll drop her off. See you later.â Paige opened the door and almost walked smack into her Aunt Gayle.
The two of them stared at each other, neither one saying a word. Moments passed and Paigeâs temple began to throb. âExcuse me,â she said and went to step out the doorway.
The sight of her auntâs car door opening caused her to stop in her tracks. Her cousin Celeste got out. The tension became even thicker.
Celeste couldnât even look Paige in the eye as she walked by. Her cousin had caused more trouble than a little bit and had reason to feel ashamed. For some reason,
