Alfie said.
âMy co-pilot, Jerry Atkins,â the Chaplain explained. âRight then, today Iâve arranged a short assault course for you.â
Several people groaned.
âIt wonât be difficult,â the Chaplain went on. âJust twice round the field, then climb over those bales of hay over there. Itâll make men of you.â
âI donât want to be a man,â Alice said.
The Chaplain peered at her. âAh, yes. People then. Oh,â he remembered, âand youâll have to crawl under that wire mesh over there.â
âDoesnât sound too bad,â Alfie whispered to Jack.
âAvoiding the machine gun fire,â the Chaplain continued. âThen itâs a quick swing over the pond on the rope Iâve attached to that overhanging branch.â
âWell, at least that should be all right,â Jack said.
âBeing careful not to fall in and get eaten by the hundred or so piranha fish Iâve put in the pond.â
As Alfie and the others watched, a duck flew down towards the pond. It hoveredjust above the water before landing, and gave out a contented quack. Then a blue lightning bolt of electricity zapped up and hit the duck, which fell lifeless into the water.
âAnd the electric eel,â the Chaplain went on. He hesitated as he saw Class 3D was looking past him, their mouths open. âProblem?â
The skeleton of a dead duck was tossed out of the pond and landed on the grass nearby.
âGood,â said the Chaplain. âRightâoff you go then.â
Sam was allowed to whiz round the course in his wheelchair, since he couldnât crawl under the mesh or swing on the rope.
Bethâs satellite detector bleeped and booped as he moved.
Alfie and Beth kept close to Sam. âAny sign of it yet?â asked Alfie.
âNothing so far.â Sam waited while Beth and Alfie ducked under the mesh and crawled quickly through. The ground exploded round them.
âSee if you can move out a bit,â Alfie suggested. âCover a bigger area.â
After theyâd swung successfully over the pond, Alfie turned to Beth. âHow close does the detector need to be to find the satellite?â
Beth sighed. âItâs not easy to get long range with a portable, battery-powered detector you know.â
âHow close?â
âAbout a metre.â
Alfie frowned. âBut that means Sam will have to run over it.â
âMaybe.â Beth looked a bit embarrassed.
âWouldnât he see it first?â
âMaybe,â she said again.
As he watched Sam whizzing back and forth across the playground at twenty miles an hour, Alfie wasnât sure that Bethâs detector was going to be the best way to find the satellite after all.
Chapter 8
âThat was very good, Alfie,â Miss Jones said as she handed back his homework the next morning. âIn fact, yours was the only plan that the Homework Analysis Team gave a 90% chance of success.â
âWhat did you do?â Jack wanted to know. âI only got a 45% chance of success. I never heard of anyone getting 90%.â
âDid you pole vault over the electric fences?â Sam wanted to know.
âStun the guard dogs with an electric shock gun you invented yourself?â Beth asked.
âMaybe he dug a tunnel,â Alice suggested. âI did.â
âNo,â Chloe told them, âa powered hangglider with sat-nav is best. My dad bought me one the other week. Bet you didnât think of that,â she told Alfie.
âI just shot all the guards and blew up the place,â Harry said glumly. âHAT said that didnât fulfil the Mission Brief because I didnât get hold of the vital plans. Only gave me 10%.â
âSo come on,â Jack said, âhow did you do it?â
Alfie shrugged, embarrassed by all the attention. âI pretended to be a postman bringing the letters. Special delivery to be
