âYou have chocolate all over you face.â
âOh.â Ninaâs expression dropped a little as she looked down at her hands, covered in batter. Her eyes began frantically scouring the kitchen for a napkin. âSorry. I didnât mean to make a mess.â
Shit
. Cass hadnât meant to sound like sheâd been scolding Nina. âYou didnât make a mess. I usually get way messier when I bake. You must cook a lot.â
Nina offered a tentative smile.
Cass pulled her cell phone from her back pocket. âHere. Let me take a picture of you to send to your dad.â
âOh, um, oh-okay.â Despite the hesitancy of her words, Nina brightened at the mention of sending a picture.
âSay âbrownies,ââ Cass urged as she positioned her camera to snap a photo of Nina.
âBrownies,â Nina said through a wide grin.
âGot it.â Cass turned the phone around to show Nina. âYou look adorable.â
Nina blushed slightly at the compliment, which made Cass smile. She sent the picture to Alex and then wet a paper towel to help Nina clean up.
They had just finished washing the bowl andspoon when Cassâ phone dinged with an incoming text. Looks like sheâs having fun. You didnât put pot in the brownies, did you?
Cass laughed, causing Nina to look up at her. âIs that my dad?â
âYup. He said it looks like youâre having fun.â
Nina smiled broadly before walking into the living room, seemingly more comfortable in Cassâ house now that theyâd bonded over brownies.
Cass stayed in the kitchen and replied to Alex. People are capable of having fun in my company without being high. I believe youâve enjoyed yourself a time or two.
She then went into the living room and found Nina pulling a coloring book and markers out of her backpack. âIs it okay if I color?â
âWell, that depends,â Cass said. âCan I color too?â
It seemed that Cass had said another thing right, because Nina nodded excitedly and got out an extra book for Cass. As Cass picked out a green marker to begin coloring a picture of Ariel, her phone dinged again.
How do you know I wasnât high?
Cass snorted, causing Nina to look up at her. âIs that my dad again?â
âYeah.â
âWhat did he say?â
Cass fumbled for a reply since the truth wasnât an option. âHe said weâd better save him some brownies.â Cass had never been more thankful that her job required her to think on her feet.
Nina looked pleased at that and resumed coloring Cinderella. âTell him we canât make any promises.â
A smart-ass after my own heart
. Cass quickly typedout a message telling Alex to leave them aloneâthey were busy coloringâand that theyâd see him later.
And that was how the two girls spent the afternoon: coloring, talking intermittently, and eating brownies. Cass couldnât remember when sheâd had a better day.
Chapter 4
Publicity
Everyone had been shocked when Cass showed up at Laurenâs housewarming with Nina. Cass was trying not to be offended, but her friends werenât making it easy.
âSo wait. Alex needed a babysitter for Nina . . . and he called you?â Quinn questioned.
Cass crossed her arms over her chest. âWhy is that so surprising? Itâs not like Iâm some homicidal maniac. Iâm a successful, responsible adult, thank you very much.â
Simone looked over at Nina, who was sitting on Scottâs shoulders eating a hot dog. âShe looks happy, so it couldnât have been too much of a train wreck.â
âSeriously?â Cass yelled indignantly. âWhy wouldnât she be happy? Iâm a great time.â
âAt least thatâs what the bathroom wall at Mickeyâs says,â Simone said, causing Quinn and Lauren to burst out laughing.
âScrew you, guys,â Cass muttered as she
