Mountain state park.” Micah looked out the window, his green eyes deep and pensive like the forest around them. “The owner comes here in the winter from what I can tell. To trap.”
Sarah’s gaze lowered over his chest, her stomach knotting at the blood seeping through the bandages. Again. “We need to quit…”
He looked at her and the direct gaze made her heart skip a beat. He was so damn cute. Even more so with the dark hair along his jaw. He gave her a sexy grin, his eyes dropping to her chest, making the thin t-shirt feel not there under his hot gaze. “We need to quit what?”
She bit her lip and flicked her finger at his chest with a small grimace. “You need to heal.”
He looked down then back up with a semi incredulous chuckle. “I’m healing just fine, thank you.”
“Micah,” she whined, “that’s not fine, that’s horrible. It hurts me to look at it.”
    “Then don’t look.”
“Don’t look, how can I not look, it’s staring at me saying you’re killing him. ”
He gave her the biggest smile. “It does feel like I’m dying when you…” his brows furrowed in pain.
“Stop it,” Sarah whispered, her face burning.
    He chuckled then winced.
“See? You need to take it easy.”
“Yes, I agree. But not making love to you would be a major setback to my health.”
She lowered her gaze with a snort. “I don’t like hurting you.”
She looked at him and the humor in his face slowly faded into raw emotion. “You’re saving me,” he said. “From the first day I met you, Doc.” He lowered his gaze, the words sounding strangled. “You’re…life for me, and hope.” He looked out the window and his jaw tensed before he stole her breath with a tear filled gaze. “You’re my heaven.”
Joy and love constricted her chest. “Dear God,” she rasped, wiping tears from her cheeks. “You certainly deserve a little heaven.”
Sarah jumped at how quickly he stood. He paced back and forth, then raked both hands in his hair.
    “What’s wrong?”
He stopped at the little sink and braced his palms on the ledge, hanging his head. “What’s wrong,” he barely mumbled. “What’s wrong is me. What’s wrong is you with me.” He gave her only his profile. “What’s wrong is you thinking I could deserve anything good. What’s wrong is you not knowing who and what I am, what I’ve fucking done.” He turned, his face a mask of disgust. “Heaven is the last thing I deserve, Sarah. You. Good. Kindness, compassion. Maybe once upon a time I may have deserved it before I committed my life to Satan, maybe then, yes. I can suspend my own self-loathe for a moment to consider perhaps there was once. Upon. A time. That I might deserve any kind of goodness, but that is long long long fucking gone, like two hundred murders ago gone.”
Sarah cringed. “But…you said you didn’t hurt innocent.”
He stared at her like she missed a very glaring piece of information. “Sweetheart.” He shook his head with derisive incredulity. “I’m Number Seven. From the Order Of The Thirteen Angels.” His voice lowered to near pleading-- a what don’t you get begging. “I’ve killed so many people. Innocent?” His head shook with tear filled eyes. “How would I know what the fuck that even is? I’m a devil playing God. I killed wicked people. I turned a blind eye to the slaughter of innocent.” He raised his hands, palms before her. “My hands… and my heart… are drenched in blood.”
Sarah shook her head. “There’s forgiveness for those who repent, Micah. That’s the point.”
“The point?” He shook his head, his face crimped with confusion. “The point is me getting away with murder? Is that the point?”
“ It’s not like that. It’s about you learning, it’s about you making your decisions and learning.”
    “Learning what?” he yelled.
Sarah bolted up. “That you’re not God! ” she yelled back. “That is the great lie you’ve been told, isn’t it? That God
