concealment.
âSo thatâs where Aldreas hid it,â Vanion said. âMaybe he was wiser than we thought. You said he told you some things. Such as what?â
âThat he had been poisoned,â Sparhawk replied. âProbably the same poison they gave Ehlana.â
âWas it Annias?â Kalten asked grimly.
Sparhawk shook his head. âNo. It was Princess Arissa.â
âHis own sister ?â Bevier exclaimed. âThatâs monstrous!â Bevier was an Arcian, and he had deep moral convictions.
âArissa is fairly monstrous,â Kalten agreed. âSheâs not the sort to let little things stand in her way. How did she get out of the cloister in Demos to dispose of Aldreas, though?â
âAnnias arranged it,â Sparhawk told him. âShe entertained Aldreas in her usual fashion, and when he was exhausted, she gave him the poisoned wine.â
âI donât quite understand,â Bevier frowned.
âThe relationship between Arissa and Aldreas went somewhat beyond what is customary for a brother and sister,â Vanion told him delicately.
Bevierâs eyes widened and the blood drained from his olive-skinned face as he slowly gathered Vanionâs meaning.
âWhy did she kill him?â Kalten asked. âRevenge for locking her up in that cloister?â
âNo, I donât think so,â Sparhawk told him. âI think it was a part of the overall scheme she and Annias had hatched. First they poisoned Aldreas and then Ehlana.â
âSo the way to the throne would be clear for Arissaâs bastard son?â Kalten surmised.
âItâs sort of logical,â Sparhawk agreed. âIt fits together even tighter when you know that Lycheas the bastard is Anniasâs son too.â
âA Churchman?â Tynian said, looking a bit startled. âDo you people here in Elenia have different rules from the rest of us?â
âNot really, no,â Vanion replied. âAnnias seems to feel that heâs above the rules, and Arissa goes out of her way to break them.â
âArissaâs always been just a little indiscriminate,â Kalten added. âRumour has it that she was on very friendly terms with just about every man in Cimmura.â
âThat might be a slight exaggeration,â Vanion said. He stood up and went to the window. âIâll pass this information on to Patriarch Dolmant,â he said, looking out at the foggy night. âHe may be able to make some use of it when the time comes to elect a new Archprelate.â
âAnd perhaps the Earl of Lenda might be able to use itas well,â Sephrenia suggested. âThe royal council is corrupt, but even they might balk if they find that Annias is trying to put his own bastard son on the throne.â She looked at Sparhawk. âWhat else did Aldreas tell you?â she asked.
âJust one other thing. We know we need some magic object to cure Ehlana. He told me what it is. Itâs Bhelliom. Itâs the only thing in the world with enough power.â
Sephreniaâs face blanched. âNo!â she gasped. âNot Bhelliom!â
âThatâs what he told me.â
âIt presents a big problem,â Ulath declared. âBhelliomâs been lost since the Zemoch war, and even if weâre lucky enough to find it, it wonât respond unless we have the rings.â
âRings?â Kalten asked.
âThe Troll-Dwarf, Ghwerig, made Bhelliom,â Ulath explained. âThen he made a pair of rings to unlock its power. Without the rings, Bhelliomâs useless.â
âWe already have the rings,â Sephrenia told him absently, her face still troubled.
âWe do?â Sparhawk was startled.
âYouâre wearing one of them,â she told him, âand Aldreas gave you the other this very night.â
Sparhawk stared at the ruby ring on his left hand, then back at his teacher.
