Behind the lodge, they found a scrap heap next to the garage. Debbie saw an old sled under a tarpaulin. They piled it with metal pipes and strips of wood.
âTake that wire, too,â Benny said. âItâs perfect for holding the form together.â
Now that they knew what they were doing, the work went fast. In an hour, four stick figures stood in the snow. By supper time, they had the rough beginnings of snowy self-portraits.
âI wonder how Freddyâs team is doing,â Jason said.
âDonât worry about them,â Benny said. âJust think about doing the best we can.â
CHAPTER 8
Smashed Snowmen
A t 5:30, the snow sculptors were too cold and tired to work anymore. Benny hurried inside to the dining room, where he spotted his sisters and brother at a table. He rushed over to join them. âWait till you see our snowpeople!â he said.
Pete stomped into the dining room. He sat down at a corner table.
Henry pushed himself away from the table. âI think Iâll ask him to eat with us,â he said.
âHe still looks pretty angry,â Benny commented.
âMaybe we can cheer him up. He seemed so unhappy at lunch,â Jessie said.
Henry went over and sat down next to Pete. âWe have room at our table,â he said.
âSo?â Pete snapped.
Henry shrugged. âWe thought you might like to eat with us.â
Pete rolled his eyes. âYou thought wrong.â
Henry stood up. âWell, if you change your mindâ¦â
Violet knew Henry felt bad. When he returned to their table, she said, âMaybe heâll eat with us tomorrow.â
âWhereâs Grandfather?â Benny asked. âI want to show him our snowpeople.â
âHeâs eating later, with Mr. Mercer,â Violet told him.
âIâd like to tell Jimmy about them, too,â Benny said, looking around. âWhere is he?â
âI donât think heâs here yet,â Jessie said.
âFreddy hasnât come in either,â Henry added.
Mr. Mercerâs helper filled plates with hamburgers and French fries and passed them down the table.
âMy favorite!â Benny exclaimed.
Jessie laughed. âEverythingâs your favorite, Benny,â she teased.
Pete ate fast and started out of the room.
âLooks like Peteâs not staying for dessert,â Henry observed.
âHeâs not even staying for second helpings,â Benny put in.
Shortly after Pete left, Freddy appeared. She went from table to table asking, âHas anyone seen my glove?â
When she asked the Aldens, Benny said, âTheyâre in your pocket.â
Freddy yanked out an orange, green, and yellow glove. âThe other one,â she explained. âI lost it somewhere.â
Jessie remembered seeing her with both gloves at lunch. âMaybe one fell on the floor,â she said.
They looked all around. Benny looked under the table. No glove.
âGood thing I have another pair,â Freddy said.
She stuffed the glove back into her pocket. Something fell to the floor. Freddy scooped it up quickly, but the Aldens saw it.
It was a key, with a tag attached to it.
Freddy hurried away without looking at the Aldens.
Behind the Aldens, someone asked, âWhat was all that about?â
It was Jimmy.
âFreddy lost a glove,â Violet told him.
He shrugged. âItâll turn up.â
âAnd she had a key,â Violet said. âI wonder if itâs the one Mr. Mercerâs missing.â
Jimmy shook his head. âProbably her room key.â
âShe picked it up so fast,â Jessie said. âLike she didnât want anyone to see it.â
Jimmy waved that away. âFreddy does everything fast,â he said.
Benny told him about the snow sculpture. âWill you come and see it after supper?â he asked.
âI wonât have time,â Jimmy said. âI have to call my parents and take care of
