partner. âWell, now what do we do, Ryan?â
Ryan tried the padlocked door again. The aging wood creaked a little, but the lock held. âThere must be some way in here,â he muttered. He walked back to Henry. âThat just leaves you. I bet you could figure out a way to get in the stable. Maybe you even have a key.â
Henry didnât flinch. âWhy are you here?â His voice was strong, but his heart was beating fast.
âOh, we should have explained that,â Hank said. âWeâre here . . . â He paused and glanced at Ryan.
âWeâre here to take one of the horses to the veterinarian. The big one with the star . . . heâs got a bad foot.â
âThe veterinarian?â Mr. Morgan hadnât said anything about a horse going to the vetâs, and Henry was more suspicious than ever.
âWell, youâll have to come back tomorrow,â Henry said firmly.
âNow thatâs not such a good idea,â Ryan said thoughtfully. âThe poor horse must be suffering. He really should be treated right away.â
Violet glanced at the horse trailer behind the car. It was burgundy-colored and there was no name on it. âWhatâs the name of the veterinarian?â
Hank scratched his head. âWell, thatâs easy. Itâs Doc, uh, Doc . . .â
âDoc Henderson,â Ryan said smoothly. âMaybe youâve heard of him.â
Violet shook her head. She was suspicious, too. What did the men want with Wind Dancer?
Jessie turned as Benny scampered over to them. He looked at the shiny horse trailer. âNeat!â he exclaimed. âIs there a horse inside?â
âNot yet,â Hank said. âI donât suppose you know how to get into the stables, do you?â
Benny looked at the padlocked door and shook his head. âNo, youâll have to wait until the Morgans get home. They should be here any minute.â
Violet wanted to hug him. That was exactly the right thing to say!
Hank gave a worried look to his partner. âMaybe we should come back another time,â he said, backing toward the car.
âI think weâll have to,â Ryan replied. He had his car keys in his hand and seemed eager to be on his way.
âThat would be a good idea,â Henry said firmly.
He stared at Henry for a long minute. âWeâll be back.â He was scowling and his voice was cold.
The moment the car rumbled back down the drive, Violet turned to Henry. âWhat was that all about?â she asked. âDo you think they were here to kidnap Wind Dancer?â
âSomethingâs going on,â Henry told her. âWe have to let the Morgans know right away. Wind Dancer could be in real danger.â
As soon as the Morgans pickup truck pulled up in the driveway, all four Aldens hurried over. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan were busily unloading some bags of grain from the truck.
âWell, it looks like we have a welcoming committee,â Mrs. Morgan said, smiling.
âWe have something really important to talk to you about,â Henry told her. âIn private.â
Mr. Morgan looked serious. âCome inside the house, children.â He waited until everyone was settled in the den. âNow whatâs this all about?â
âWe know about Wind Dancer,â Jessie blurted out.
âYou call him Star, but we know who he really is!â Violet chimed in.
âSome men were here today to steal him!â Benny said, his eyes wide. âBut we stopped them just in time.â
Mrs. Morgan put her hand to her mouth. âOh, no!â she cried.
âSlow down,â Mr. Morgan said. âNow, Henry, start at the beginning and tell me exactly what happened.â
Henry told him about the men trying the padlocked door, and he gave a good description of the car and the horse trailer. When he finished Mr. Morgan shook his head.
âI guess I should have been honest with you last
