and she glanced at her watch to check the time. It was too early to be anyone from Moretti’s office coming to check on her.
She walked across the room with a feeling of dread. The timing was exactly right for someone to arrive if they’d taken the early flight from Paris.
She checked the peephole and groaned out loud.
“Papa, what are you doing here?” she asked as she opened the door.
Emile Vallerio crossed the threshold and kissed her on both cheeks. “We wanted to make sure that everything was okay here in Milan.”
“We?”
Like magic, her sister appeared in the doorway. “I decided to come with Papa to see if I could help out in any way,” Genevieve said.
Nathalie’s older sister was renowned for her beauty and charm. Nathalie had never really minded being the smart sister, but if her father had brought Genevieve he must think…“Why?”
“Let’s discuss this over coffee. I see you aren’t ready for your meeting.”
“Papa, I’ve been handling these things for a long time. I don’t need you and Genevieve here. I can handle it. Go back to Paris.”
“We will. After we are sure you know what you are doing,” Emile said.
“I love you both very much, but I don’t need you to tell me how to do my job.”
“I know,” Genevieve said. “But the Morettis can be tricky.”
“I’m not untried. I can handle Antonio,” she said, wondering if the words were true. Could she handle him? Last night had tested her and she suspected each day they spent together in the boardroom was going to make resisting him more difficult.
“Antonio?” Genevieve questioned.
“How is he in person? I’ve heard that he’s a shark,” Emile said.
“He’s a lot like me. I think we’ll get some of the things we want, but we’re not going to be able to rake them over the coals as you might have wanted.”
“At the end of the day, I just want a fair deal for our family. Lorenzo manipulated my aunt out of her share of the Moretti fortune. We don’t want that for this generation. She was promised a share of Moretti Motors and in order to get Lorenzo to sign the annulment so she could marry again he made her give up her rights to those shares.”
“I agree, Papa. I’ve told Antonio that we aren’t going to take just any deal. There’s nothing in this for us unless they sweeten their offer.”
She glanced down at her watch. “I have to start getting ready.”
“Go ahead,” her father said. “We will wait here for you.”
She rolled her eyes. She knew how important this was to her family. Her great-aunt had been in a bitter marriage and had died young. They had almost no contact with her son and his family. The split of the Vallerio and Moretti families was complete.
“What are you going to wear today?” her sister asked.
“I don’t need fashion advice, Genie.”
“I know. But this man is used to very sophisticated women.”
Her sister had a point. She was used to winning in the boardroom based on her smarts and her determination. But with Antonio, maybe she could use clothing and feminine wiles to distract him.
She sighed. “What do you think I should wear?”
Genevieve laughed. “I took the liberty of bringing a dress with me that I think will look super on you.”
“Do you really think so?” Nathalie asked. In this case she deferred to the pretty sister.
“Nat, you goof, of course it will. You probably already have him dazzled. This is just going to take away his ability to look anywhere but at your cleavage.”
She shook her head. “I don’t like to use my body as a tool.”
“Why not? Nature made us this way, Nat. We’re not stronger than men but we are smarter.” Genevieve winked. “And sexier.”
“You haven’t met Antonio.”
“Really?”
“Yes,” she said. “He’s very sexy.”
“Good. Then he’ll use his looks to his benefit. You won’t be taking advantage of him by bringing sex into the boardroom.”
Her sister had a point. And Antonio had agreed
