âA pleasant surprise is waiting for you,ââ said Erin.
âMine is: âYou have common sense and a lot of charm,ââ I said.
âThatâs a nice one,â said my aunt.
âIâd rather get a surprise or win something,â I said.
âCommon sense and charm will get you far.â My aunt got a serious look on her face. âYou know, giving Rosemary T. the silent treatment might work for a while, but youâll have to talk to her eventually.â
âWhy?â I asked.
âBecause it will start to get too awkward,â she said. âLike the phone call tonight.â
I thought about what she was saying and knew she was right. If my mom had been here when Rosemary T. called, she would have made me talk to her for sure. âBut I donât have anything good to say.â
âDonât you want to discuss whatâs going on with the two of you?â asked my aunt. âDonât you want to try to figure out what the problem is?â
âIâm not sure,â I said.
âYou have to do what feels right to you,â said Aunt Flora. âBut sometimes you get pushed too far, and you have to tell someone whatâs what.â
âWhatâs that mean?â I asked.
âIt means telling someone how youâre really feeling,â said my aunt, âclearing the air.â
âI guess clear air would be good,â I said. âBut Iâm hoping it will clear up all on its own.â
âIt might,â said my aunt.
âI mean, Rosemary T. used to be nice, and she could be nice again. Then I wouldnât have to have a whatâs what at all.â
âThis is where your common sense is going to come in handy.â Aunt Flora broke open her fortune cookie. ââAll your hard work will pay off,ââ she read.
âI wish Iâd gotten that one,â I said.
âWhy?â she asked.
âBecause maybe it would be about the spelling bee. Maybe all our studying would pay off in us winning.â
âWell, in that caseââAunt Flora handed me her fortuneââitâs yours.â
Chapter 6
Great with a Capital G
W e studied for a while and then watched Animal Planet with Tess. It was hard, though, because she asked a million zillion questions. Finally my aunt put her to bed.
âPeace at last,â I said.
âIt is awfully quiet,â said Aunt Flora. âMiss Purvis must love her new hiding place.â
The three of us settled in to watch The Wizard of Oz . That is one of my all-time favorite movies, but I donât get to watch it too much because the witch and the flying monkeys scare the dickens out of Tess.
When it was time for us to go to bed, we found out just where Miss Purvisâs new hiding place was. It was right on my top bunk! She was at the end where my feet go, mixed in between a Lego pirate ship and a Playmobil castle. She opened one eye and stared at me, but she didnât get up to leave.
âIt would be so great if she slept here all night.â I climbed under the covers and made sure my feet didnât push into her.
Erin turned off the light and climbed into the bottom bunk. âI really like your new bed.â
âMe too,â I said.
âDo you usually sleep on the top or the bottom?â
âI go back and forth,â I said. âIf my toys are spread out too much up here, I sleep down there.â
âWhy do you keep some toys up there?â asked Erin.
âBecause of Tess,â I said. âSometimes she knocks things over and breaks stuff apart.â
Erin didnât talk for a minute. âDo you like having a little sister?â
âMost of the time,â I said. âBut sometimes sheâs a pest.â
âI hope Anna and Julia donât think Iâm a pest,â said Erin.
Anna and Julia were Erinâs new stepsisters that were away at college.
âJust donât wreck
