cover for me the day after tomorrow so you and Lisa and I can go on our farewell ride before you-know-what happens.â
âI sure do know what,â Stevie said. âItâs the only topic of discussion at my house these days. Well, I mean itâs the only thing Alex wants to talk about. Iâm sorry Lisaâs going away for the summer, but I guess I understand it. Itâs her father, after all.
âThatâs great that Emily can cover for you. We should be able to be out of here by ten oâclock or so.â
âThatâs what I thought,â said Carole. âAnd we wonât have to worry about your new job meaning you canât go. There arenât too many people who order pizzas for breakfast.â
âI think weâll be safe on that score, if I get the job.â
âJob? What job?â Lisa entered the office.
âI got my license, and now Iâm going to apply for a job at Pizza Manor.â
âOh, thatâs great!â said Lisa. âBy any chance, did anybody else in your family get a license today?â
âGee, who could she be asking about?â Stevie said.
âBoth your parents have licenses,â Carole said. âAnd we all know Chad does. So that leaves the dog, right?â
âOnly if the dog is named Alex,â said Lisa. âDid he pass?â
âYeah, he did,â Stevie assured her. âAnd that means he can get to all those lawns heâs going to mow while youâre away. You wonât have to worry about him getting into trouble at all. Heâll be too tired every night to do anything.â
âI wasnât worried about that,â Lisa said. âI know youâll look after my interests.â
âActually,â Stevie said, âyou are the one thing we almost never talk about. He used to confide in me about his girlfriends, but not about you. Oh, sure, heâs been mooning around the house, complaining about you going away for the whole summer, but he never says anything really personal. He assumes you talk to me about him.â
âWhich of course I donât,â said Lisa.
âThatâs the problem with having your brother date your best friend. Iâm missing out on all the good dope from two people I used to be able to count on!â
Lisa flopped into the other chair in Caroleâs office. Carole glanced at Fezâs incomplete notebook and the pile of other paperwork that awaited her, but for the moment, her friendsâ concerns were more important. Fez could wait a few minutes.
âThis is the worst!â Carole said. âStevie and I are going to miss you, and Alex is going to be miserable, and thatâll make Stevie miserable, and you know that when Stevieâs miserable, the whole world is miserable.â
âAw, come on,â Lisa said, a little bite in her voice. âItâs not going to be that long. I didnât ask my parents to get a divorce. I didnât tell Dad to fall in love with someone who lives in California. I didnât choose to have my life split in half.â
âEasy, easy,â Carole said. âWeâre just venting. I guess none of us much likes the whole situation, so maybe weâd better stop talking about it.â
âOr else we could look on the positive side,â Stevie suggested.
âAnd that is?â
âYouâre going to spend a whole summer in sunny Southern California. Youâll certainly get to see Skye, and thatâs always lots of fun.â
âHeâs pretty busy,â Lisa said.
âStarring in another movie?â asked Carole. Skye Ransom was an actor the girls had known for a long time. Theyâd met him by accidentâhis accidentâwhen heâd fallen off a horse. Theyâd helped him out, and theyâd been friends ever since.
âNo, itâs not a movie,â said Stevie. âItâs a television series. A contemporary series set on
