polite in this world. So, how about you let me pass.” No, I did not just say that. God, I didn't even know this guy but he rubbed me the wrong way. A small voice in my head felt the need to chime in, “I bet he could rub you the right way.” Go shove it, horny voice! I felt my cheeks turn a warm shade of pink. Great. I’m such a moron.
Macho Man’s eyebrow raised and the corners of his mouth twitched upward. I narrowed my eyes at him and spat, “Do you speak English or caveman?”
“I speak English just fine,” he said with a slight southern accent. Just the sound of his warm liquid voice seemed to caress my skin and settle inside me. I swallowed down the rush of heat his voice brought and gathered my too-fast waning resolve and attacked again.
“Well, could you move? All of you,” I gestured to him, “seems to be blocking me from getting to my apartment.” God, why did this guy seem to bring out the hostility in me?
“Macho Man Randy Savage? Really? I like to think I’m more of a blond Rock if indeed I had to pick one,” he said with an annoyingly chipper tone.
I paused to think about it. No, Chris Hemsworth. Now that I really considered it, he did remind me of Thor. Lord help me, the man was beautiful. I shook my head, trying to extricate my libido from the current situation.
“Look I've had a shit day and I would love to go to bed. You’re literally standing in front of my door. See my problem?” God I even sounded bitchy to myself, so that must be bad.
“Look I'm not sure who you are but…”
“Reid,” he said, cutting me off.
“What?” I replied, blinking up at him. Good lord how tall was this guy? I didn’t think of myself as short, but next to Macho Man here, I was a damn child’s dolly.
He cleared his throat. “You said you didn’t know who I was, so I’m telling you. My name is Reid. Reid Jamison. And you must be Delaney Hagen.”
I thought I might have stopped breathing. How the flying fuck did this guy know my name? Sweat dripped down my back, leaving an icy chill in its wake. I took a quick step back. He gave me a smile that could only be seen as predatory.
“The Coven sent me to investigate the death of Sierra…” he trailed off, obviously trying to think of her last name.
In a low, but very controlled voice, I said, “Pierce. Her last name is Pierce. Was, I guess it’s was now.” Tears threatened to blur my vision, but I would be damned if this man would see me cry. “And since when did the Coven give three shits about an unregistered witch?” I said in my iciest tone. I mean, really. The Coven couldn't care less about unregistered witches. In fact, they would have us jailed if they could. He had to be lying.
“Could we maybe step in and talk in private?” he asked, putting emphasis on the word private .
Is he kidding, or does he think I am a moron? I honestly had to re-evaluate my thoughts on this hulk of a man. He wasn’t a witch. I knew that for sure. He didn’t have the telltale feel of a witch. Every witch had a power base that came from within them. To other witches, it felt like a dull thrum of power. It’s like feeling a second pulse in your core. From what Mil had told me, it’s the magic calling out to one of its own. This Reid guy didn't have that, but he wasn't human. I wasn't sure what he was, but I surely wanted to figure it out.
“What are you? You’re not a witch. I know that for sure. And I know the Coven would never hire a human. And you don't feel like a human. So, what are you?” I widened my stance and put my hands on my hips and looked up at him with my best impatient look. He raised an eyebrow at me and the corners of his perfectly formed mouth started to twitch in an upward motion. He seemed as if he was trying not to laugh at me.
Oh, you have got to be kidding me! What a condescending asshole . That was it. I was going to electrocute the shit out of him, both metaphorically and literally. I narrowed my eyes at him and said,
