seriously, especially if youâre a woman.â
He gave her a long glance from face to feet, pausing in between. âBelieve me, itâs more than obvious youâre a woman, attitude or no attitude.â When he moved closer and pushed a wayward curl from her shoulder, she immediately tensed. âRelax. Iâm not going to jump you.â
âDo you think Iâd be here if I really believed you would?â she said without looking at him.
âSomethingâs making you nervous.â
âOkay, I admit it, being here with you makes me nervous.â She sent a quick glance his way. âAre you happy now?â
He could think of several things that would make him happy. Having her nervous wasnât one of them. âIâm strung a little tight myself.â
That brought her attention back to him. âThe iceman nervous? The prosecutor who prides himself on being totally in control?â
God, he hated that whole âicemanâ thing. âBelieve me, Iâm not always in control.â Right now his control was in jeopardy. âAnd under certain circumstances, Iâm definitely not the iceman.â
âYou couldâve fooled me. Iâve never seen you look the least bit on edge.â
âMaybe you havenât been looking hard enough. Or maybe you just donât want to see it because around you Iâm always on edge.â
âAround me?â
Time for the truth, regardless of the consequences. âYeah. Every time Iâm near you. Donât pretend you havenât noticed this thing between us.â
âWhat thing?â Her sudden inability to look at him contradicted her denial.
âThe one weâve been skirting for the past few months.â
âI have no idea what youâre talking about.â
âOkay, have it your way. Iâll spell it out for you.â
âPlease do.â
When Daniel inched a little closer, this time Alisha didnât move. In fact, she felt as if her bottom had been bonded to the cushions or perhaps she was simply mesmerized by his aura.
âI noticed you for the first time last year, while you were still working for Gailey and company,â he said. âBut I also noticed you were with Troy Moreau most of the time and I sensed something was going on between the two of you.â
He had that one nailed. âWe worked together quite a bit.â The truth. âNothing more to it than that.â A lie.
The look he gave her said he didnât exactly believe her. âBack then I didnât approach you for that reason and because I was involved with someone, too.â
âWho?â Did she have to sound so absurdly jealous?
âIt doesnât matter. Thatâs been over a long time. When Iheard youâd been added to the public-defender rolls, I started looking for you.â
Unbelievable. âYou started looking for me?â
âYeah. Do you remember that day you negotiated the plea on the Jones case back in August?â
âThat was my first case as a public defender.â
âDo you remember me coming in to sign off on the deal because the D.A. was out of the office?â
Boy, did she, right down to every detail, including the red diamond pattern on his navy tie. âYes.â
âI didnât have to be there. Hildebrand talked to me about it beforehand and Iâd given my okay. I came in because I wanted to see you.â
Alisha felt the creep of a blush climbing up her throat. âReally?â
He smiled. âReally. And after that I kept searching you out just so I could talk to you. Didnât you ever wonder why we kept running into each other?â
âI assumed you just found provoking me so much fun, you couldnât stay away.â
âI didnât want to stay away from you. The provocation was just a cover for the fact that I wanted to know you better. A lot better.â
She was having a difficult time buying
